iamscott06
Lets make a magazine.. Online of course and then once it picks up we move to the printing press. When i get home i'll boot up the good ol' mac, start up illustrator and go to town on making a layout or something. OrIs this a bad idea that will fail miserably?ThanksScott
ZenSilk
You should get the vendors in on it first, just so you have some back-up. And get Eric on it too!.....Naturally.
chinamon
if there was a print version of a hookah magazine i would definitely subscribe.

iamscott06
Yea i want the vendors to talk to me about it. I'm only 19 and me and my friends started talking about the idea like 2 nights ago. Im thinking maybe start out with like a monthly newsletter or something along those lines just to get some subscribers and spread the word out. Once that picks up we hit the printing press!!Scott
Dekon
Well if you start a magazine, what are you going to have in it? Examples :Definately have ads every couple of pages for "funds" F.A.QUser reviews of flavors and hookahsTips (for noobs. IE. Add iced water for colder smoke or what ever)etc? iamscott06
Yea i have some basic stuff.. im thinking if its like a 30 page magazine.. at least 10 would have to be ads. Then maybe each month review a hookah/bowl/accersory/shisha brand/flavor? Flavor of the month umm yea some Q&A stuff Hookah 101 section .. When we thought up the idea we had soooo many thoughts lol gonna have to try and remember them all.Scott
camelflage
the biggest issue to overcome when doing any sort of publication is to figure out how frequently you will have new content. Say you do a 30 page zine one month, you've got the Q&A, tips, tricks, reviews, editorial pieces, whatever. then you have to evaluate if you can create another 30 page zine in a months time with completely new content that isnt rehashed or old. once you get down how often you are going to publish you can work on the format and content you want. We could even review on-line vendors.. theres a bunch of those to. Same reasoning on coals/bowls/hoses/hookahs. Guess i should wait for some big vendors to get on and check it out. FURsAKeN
It would be easier to start off a e-zine and see how well the popularity and see how much intrest it generates, then think about hitting the print. Just a suggestion.

ZenSilk
Sometimes vendors don;t respond to emails, so i'd bet youd be safest to do both, actually PM'ing all of them from here maybe.

Or go to like actual websites and e-mail them?letter != business plan.you need to state what periodicals will be in each issue, whether it will be a monthly/quarterly/etc publication.... it needs to be fairly detailed so they have an idea of what you are putting together. they will not agree to anything if the whole online magazine thing is just something that you would LIKE to do. it has to be something that you are willing to dedicate a LOT of your time to if needed. my friend started www.tranceaddict.com a few years ago with the intention that it would just be a local forum for toronto and now it is pretty damn big on the international scale. it is the largest online community for electronic music. he spends nearly every waking hour on the site (work and personal time).edit: what im trying to say here is that vendors want details... as much detail as possible. if you were in their shoes, would you jump on board if you knew practically nothing about what you were getting yourself in to? iamscott06
Okay so that sounds like a plan chinamon, When i get home im gonna head over to my friends and we can start up a list of what we want in the magazine.. And after talking in the chat room with Dekon and FURsAKeN it's probably best to make a E-Zine. First order of business though is gathering content, then contacting the vendors, then site content! How Fun!!ScottAlso, almost forgot, i work about 40 hours a week 8-5 mon-fri, And when i get home im usually on the laptop surfing around or messing in photoshop.. so with a group of people i hOpE i'd have enough time to get the thing done. The King
I'd start with a flyer or pamphlet, see if you can get new stuff every month for a 30 page mag... i think the Q&A's are a good idea, along with a few new reviews on products, a tip of the month, flavor mix of the month, poll of the month, maybe a smoke Pic of the month(real cool rings, huge clouds idk) and so onanyways good luck and keep us all updated

By the end of the week i should have a pretty good idea of whats going to be in the e-zine and i'll type it up and send it out to a bunch of people. Just had another idea. Maybe something like a Hookah Bar of the month?? Get Some behind the scene pics of what goes on at a hookah lounge or something like that.. good promotion and something interesting to read..Scott

iamscott06
Domo, your magazine is going to be a actual magazine right? Well if it is, i think im still gonna go for the e-zine thing, it'll be different. Not as big as a real magazine, but just something nice to read about when your online and bored.. Cheese//
Distribution will be a bitch with a real mag and it'll be more difficult to find a fan base.E-zine is the way to go.
