Shiv9
OK, so me and my buddy just bought a hookah from socialsmoke. We've smoked hookah before alot. We tried many different ways ranging from amount of coals, to position of coals, to water level, ice, warm water, etc. All that aside, say we're starting off rookie. We bought a nice hookah, starbuzz and japanese coals. What would you guys(from personal experiences) do for the best smoke? Thanks for all the input. Johnny_D
Interesting question.First off Clean the hookah from top to bottom - it might have been sitting around for 6 months.Clean the bowl also.Take the hose and blow hard through it - same reason as above.Take some FRESH water and fill the vase until it's about 1/2 inch up the stem. Then put it together and suck through the hose whilst covering the top of the stem. You should NOT be able to pull air through - this ensure's it's airtight.Pack the bowl - fluff the tobacco in and then gently press it down until there is, maybe, 10mm between top ofbowl and tobacco.Don't be stingey with the tobacco though.Take some foil, shiny side down, make it real tight over the bowl. Prick holes. I prefer lots of small holes. Then put down some coals. For japanese style i would use three on the bowl - if it's too much then throw one off.Smoke.JD
Bryantos
I was curious about this, also. Arn't you supposed to move the coals around every 5-10 minutes or so to smoke over a different part of the sisha? Does this make the shisha last longer?I seem to get a heat problem every now and then with my QT just using 2 coals from 3 kings. Does a bigger hookah help with heat problems? Im not even sure if its heat problems because I have an over sensative throat to smoke. Alot of my friends can smoke it just fine, and I get to the point where if I inhale it feels like Im inhaling fire. Also, what do your coals look like before you put them on the bowl? I've been to a hookah bar, and they pretty much make sure they're on fire, then blow the fire out and put them on the bowl. I usually just wait until the coal is red on the bottom and throw it on.Thanks for any help. Edited September 14, 2007 by Bryantos
Johnny_D
No.I never move my coals. And I get a good 2Hrs out of a normal bowl with 3 coals. or 2 hrs out of a funnel using 4 coals [Find my post where i put my setup using pritty pics]Moving coals is horse-shit. Just learn how to setup and smoke like a champ! JD

guyt
moving your coals around is if you put all the coals close together. If you use 3 coals put them on 3 opposite edges and leave them alone. The only time you should move it is at the very end of the bowl because there might be a part of the bowl that didn't get used up fully and you can get an extra ten minutes of smoke. If you use one big coal, like the 40mm quick lites you need to move it around. One more thing make sure the hose fits in right, and no air get in where the hose connects that can really ruin your session. But the grommets should be fine. Glottis2
I would say not to move the coals unless it starts tasting harsh or stops tasting at all. Don't ruin a good thing.

And the whole bowl will go another hour easy - without harshness or unpleasantness.2 Hrs on a standard bowl is both normal, possible and tasty.JD

anddy
Hey Johnny, I have the stock bowl that came with my qt and I seem to always burn my shisha if I am not constantly moving it every 5 minutes or so. I pack it loosely and not high at all. I also poke the holes just like all the pictures I have seen around here. I just use 2 halves of 30mm 3K's at a time and put them at opposite edges of the bowl. It seems like I dont get enough smoke at all after a long while so I move it around and closer to the middle and then it ends up burning after 10 minutes or so. Can you give an elaborate description of how you would set up a bowl (no phunnel)? I want to be able to sit for an hour or more without moving the coals around all the time. I seems like smoking the hookah is more of a job/chore than anything else.I also use double foil. And Al Waha at the moment.

But If i remember they are quite narrow but deep?I would invest in a wider bowl, yet more shallow bowl. [more traditional] I can't speak for Al Waha i'm afraid as i've very little experience in using it.JDedit :- this is my fav smoking bowl http://www.hookahshop.co.uk/super-bowl-des...ning-p-538.html
dcfc80
Why do you put the foil shiny side down? I read somewhere that its suppose to be shiny side up. I use pre cut foils anyways. Just interested...

kornkitten42
Usually I put the coals on the bowl and leave them in once place until they die. I will then put a new set of coals on the opposite sides of where the other coals were. I hate moving them around because I always get ash in the bowl, yuck! I don't move my coals around much either. Only if it starts to get harsh. Then I'll usually just move it across the bowl to the opposite side where it's had the least heat. I find it also helps to let is sit between hits. I do it naturally most of the time, but when I get in a hurry or I'm in a mood and take hit after hit after hit, the flavor isn't as good.'Rani
Estariol
I'd definitely suggest filling half or a quarter of your vase/base with ice cubes. I find it helps. Another nice this is to add lemon to your vase. Get a lemon or two, squeeze all the juice into the vase, and it'll spruik up the flavour intensity of any shisha you've got in the bowl regardless of the flavour. When I smoke Vanilla al-Fakher (my favourite) I add vanilla extract instead of lemon to the vase/base. Yet again, it helps. Happy hookah-ing.
