armenakadino
I would love some pics of how you poke your foil pattern in aluminum foil for regular bowls funnel bowls and does it make a difference if it has the mod on the bowl the hole pattern or what size it it

RayVer
It depends on your shisha!! Some shisha needs more burning (more holes) and some need less (less holes). The best way is to experiment yourself. One trick I do is I get a long thing pocking stick and poke holes from the inside of the bowl (through the inlet holes) out to the foil. Then I poke some holes randomly around the foil depending on the shisha. the trick with poking the holes from within the inside of the bowl helps maintain a consitent airflow. try it! its been working great for me these past few daysQUOTE (OBY @ Sep 19 2007, 05:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>QUOTE (armenakadino @ Sep 18 2007, 10:26 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I would love some pics of how you poke your foil pattern in aluminum foil for regular bowls funnel bowls and does it make a difference if it has the mod on the bowl the hole pattern or what size it itI just poke lots of holes in the middle about the size of the coal. SafeSearchOff
for phunnel bowls:2 concentric circles, outer circle pretty close together, like 15-20 pokes. inner circle much more spaced out, about 7-10 pokes.for egyptian/mod bowls:make a large cross/x. make a circle around the rim. 3 holes in each of the 4 quadrants made by the x and circle. anathema
Rayver:I think that less holes allows more concentrated heat to get in. Relatively recently someone mentioned how they just poked 6 holes and placed coals directly upon them and just got smoke and only smoke.Creating more holes allows for air that isn't heated to also be drawn in. You will always take the same "size" hits and if there are only a few holes to allow the heat to get through, they're only passing through a concentrated spot in the bowl, thus making it burn.I haven't actually tried poking less than 10 holes, I usually end up with 30-40 holes on a medium/small diameter bowl.edit: forgot to address the subject; the pattern that I use is 3 rings of holes with 1 hole in the center. I space each hole about 1 cm apart. Edited September 20, 2007 by anathema
SafeSearchOff
your theory would work in theory, but i think it falls apart if you put it into action, anathema. by putting less than ten holes, your restricting air flow. though its only hot air, thus cooking your shisha more, it may seem like a good idea, but if you cant suck in, or if its like sucking through a straw, you gonna be not doing too well. also, the bowls are clay, which heat up and distribute heat pretty well, as well as the aluminum foil (in terms of distributing heat... alum foil IS NOT clay >.<). though hot air isnt being directly drawn through some shisha, its still pretty warm and its not going to be thinning your smoke too much. and to be honest, i cant think of a bowl where this would be a problem unless you just dont want to put enough coals on a phunnel bowl. nay, i theres wide airflow through our aluminum foil/steel screens for a reason. anathema
I know someone has posted it: just poking less holes and placing coals directly over the few holes they poked. And someone else responded with a "i've tried it and it works."And around 10 holes about 2mm to 3 mm in diameter is good enough to pull freely.edit: just tried it, I hit it really hard with the same setup I usually use but fewer holes and it is going to burn, I just ended up poking more holes and removing a coal to let it lower in temp and it's fine. MechAnt
I use a pound sign looking hole pattern as shown by HookahCulture. I can really vouch for this pattern because when I was hookah noob, I stumbled upon the hookah culture sight, tried that method, and it worked like a charm. Never used any pattern after that. Try it! MechAnt
If you're artistic enough I'd love to see someone poke a picture in the foil and see how well that'd smoke
joseph*
I always use a fork, so I end up with a pretty even pattern. I always try to do as many holes as I can, but I usually use a pretty big bowl.

Try it!QFT.This pattern is very good for using a regular clay bowl. I tend to poke a few wxtra holes inside and outside the pound sign. Probably just an extra 5 or 6 holes total.
