I know sometimes I get another coal going by setting it ontop of the other coals, and then end up not wanting to smoke anymore so that whole coal is just getting started, but I just typically let it burn out. I suppose that if you dip the burning part in water, then let it fully dry out over a few days, sure it should still be usable.
