Egyptian Vs. Syrian

Recommended Posts

For a while now I've been very curious in the main (and lesser known) differences between Syrian and Egyptian pipes. I know that traditionally, Syrian pipes use male bowls but generally use female bowls these days. From the Syrians that are well known (Al Kareem, Glyph, etc), it seems like they are all brass. Egyptians are pretty much all stainless steel (Of course there's the Amer that's brass cored). So, what really differentiates Syrian and Egyptian pipes?

I'm considering buying a more traditional pipe somewhere down the road and I'm really leaning toward a Syrian.

Some syrian are made with Hand-Made & Machine-Manufactured parts. The bowls used to be different, but now Syrians are switching to the non-traditional bowl style. I think all in all, Syrians look more elegant than most Egyptians, and some Syrians, as in the 29" from JandR, have 4 holes in the stem, instead of two, allowing more smoke to pass through the heart and into your hose, leading to bigger draws with less effort. (I'm not sure if four holes is common to any other types of Syrians). ANd most multiple Hose Syrians have Auto-Seal (From HS).

If you are looking for a Syrian, I'd say JandR has the best quality, all handmade parts, and each one is unique unlike HS.

But i've never seen a review for many of JandR's syrians, and a bunch for HS. I just know from experience. wink.gif

I have the Al Kareem Syrian from Hookah Company and I love it. It's not only quite beautiful but hits perfectly and it is brass cored. A middle eastern friend told me that yes, Syrians are going to female bowls which is that mine has. The main differences I can see is that Syrians are generally more ornate, has an inverted cone shape for the hose inlet, and a more esthetically pleasing purge valve design. If given a choice between my KM Tri-Metal the the Al Kareem, I'd grab them both and run for the door. I'd be very hard pressed to choose between them.

Hmmm. The Egyptians also have the tapered waves on the stem while the syrians have the sorta of ~~~~ smooth waviness to them. For my next pipe I really want to get a great brass cored pipe regardless of whether or not its Egyptian or Syrian.
