Seeing as the ice will last for up to several days in the cooler with the lid off, I don't think the extra work is necessary.Oh, and it did seem to work better than simply ice in the base. I've put ice in the chamber before and it gives a real nice cool smoke (which I think thickens the smoke too). The only problem is after a few minutes the ice melts and water goes back to normal temperature because of all the hot smoke flowing through it.With this setup it should keep you chamber cold from the start of your session till finish. Nargileh is about involving all of your senses in the experience: smell, taste, sound (bubbles), touch (the usually nice-to-hold handles on your hoses), and sight. When you do this, the visual pleasure of the hookah turns into "OMG IS THAT A STYROFOAM BOX FROM WAL-MART WITH A HOLE IN THE TOP?". Like JD said, gay. Plus, hookah head makes me dizzy standing up.On the tip, ice water would pretty much do the same, just do 3/4 ice and 1/4 water. But I guess HS's point here was put in your "favorite drink" and the ice in the foam would keep it cooler since adding ice to your drink would "dilute" it. When they die out, I put new coals on the unsmoked parts, but that's about it. I use my Nours and if the smoke dies down, I use my tongs to crack that outer layer of ash, dump it in the ash tray, and rotate. But that's like every half an hour or so. Works excellent as a way to trash small/unneeded coals and good for washing shisha off the hands. And acts as a cooler for our drinks.But it definitely worked well once my water in the base cooled down... I shoulda used cold waer to begind with, lol.
