im getting the same thing. i start my easylites with a blowtorch. i let it burn until the silver comes off then continute to let it burn another 5 minutes or so before i put it on the bowl. once i take a puff i get this nasty bite in the back of my throat. so i take those coals off and go back to 3kings and i dont have that problem. i think the easylite (japanese imitations from china) are crap.

Well, are you packing the chief tight? I normally pack it down pretty well in the gutter.

As far as easy lites. I leave them on my stove for about 5 minutes. The silver all comes off and they are glowing red all the way around. They work great for me that way with no bad tastes. I have noticed if you use natural coals or anything other than 3Kings then put 3kings on for the second coal go around it tastes like ass. (Long sentence)

yeah i got them from mnh there in the black box...and i pack mine really good but not too packed i fluff it a little

I can honestly say i have never had this problem of bad taste. Just ensure your coals are fully lit and the silver flaked off before you start smoking.

ive tried that and even let the coal burn for a few more minutes after the silver stuff came off but i still get this "bite" at the back of my throat every time i inhale. maybe those coals just werent meant for me.

i've got a box of the rolland quick lights, and i really don't like them...i'm having a hard time lighting them(keep them on the grates of a gas stove for 5 minutes or so, and they're not lit at all), and the rare occasion that i have gotten them lit, i got a nasty taste and had a really bad bowl...didn't get much flavor, not much smoke, nothing really...felt like i was smoking a cigarette more than shisha...so, it's not just you guys...
