dank7oo
Hi there - I recently noticed some copper looking metal on my mya stem ... but I am not sure if it is copper or rust :S It is NOT orange and doesnt wipe off when I rub it with paper towel or anything?? Any ideas?
SafeSearchOff
where is it on your stem? i dont have any such coloration on my QT - its about a year old now.
ZenSilk
I also have that color, but not in the 2 parts of the shaft and the heart, but in the three hose adapters and the top piece the bowl sits on. When i look inside it is a very very bright copper color. It is not visible in the two parts of the stem itself though.
Lenny
Could be the shisha's residue...Do you clean it often? Edited September 30, 2007 by Lenny
Hobocans
I'm pretty sure most MYAs use a plated metals. If they aren't plated correctly, there could be bare-spots exposing the under-metal.This could be a problem, given that the metals underneath the plates are usually unprotected and could rust (typically its just cheap steal or maybe copper (?)).I'd watch those parts and see what happens, and if they start to look rusty and there is metalic flaking, I'd contact MYA and get a replacement. If the plating isn't on there properly, that would really damage the longevity of the pipe.
MechAnt
I assume this is what you're talking about:UCSB school pride!!!!Im thinking its just unplated stainless steel. Either way, in no way does it affect performance so I don't worry too much.
dank7oo
Pretty much yes .. the only thing is I have a lot more of it ... maybe a Ishouldnt be cleaning it after every use?? Anyways, is there any chance that this can turn into rust in the future?
BrotherBuford
It's copper or brass. I let my Mya sit for a month without cleaning (with water in it) and parts of the interior of the stem started turning a little green. I scrubbed the hell out of it with a brush to get the patina off and it's fine now. (The greenish oxide is toxic if ingested; it takes a while to appear though and poor cleaning practices is about the only thing that should cause it.) MechAnt
Well, I can say for sure that it tastes like brass or MAYBE steel. Mostly brass. I'm a trombone player so I know the taste of metals. I'm pretty confident its nothing to get caught up about.

TheScotsman
That is just the brass base metal. Use will make is a brighter yellow. Fo some reason I thought Mya was using stainless steel, but I am not sure where I got that idea. I had to go take mine apart, and yes, same thing, solid brass casting that has been chrome plated (magnet won't be attracted if you want to verify the non-ferous nature.)Nothing at all to worry about. BrotherBuford
FWIW, stainless steel is also not magnetic.
