Just Got Back From Egypt!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I've been gone from here for a couple months, but with good reason. I just returned from EGYPT the other day. All I can say is WOW. This is the place for hookah smokers. On every corner on every street in every shop and cafe, you can find hookah to smoke. And the price, about 50cents American. Try comparing that to the $10-$20 you pay at a bar here.
Want some Tobacco. Sick of paying $7-$10 for a 250Gram box of Nakhla...how about 75cents for a 250Gram box of Nakhla!!! Insane!!!
Need a new hookah vase whether it be Egyptian or Genie or whatever, how does $1.80 sound.
Want a new Hookah, complete? Does $11 sound good to you. How about a SOLID BRASS hookah, is $20 ok with you?

The above is no lie guys, it was crazy. I had a blast and definitely will be returning. 3 1/2 weeks in Egypt, that was with a hotel on the sea the whole time, food everyday for me and others, going to many places daily, activities, gifts, etc....$900 total. Ticket-$1100. For $2000 I had a month long vacation of a lifetime. Oh, and I even took an Arabic School that was factored into the price. I would go again in a heartbeat, and if anyone is thinking of going talk to me and I'll give you help and advice and tips. I'll post pics of the new additions later. Take care everyone....Salam....Michael

Egypt is amazing. Its the world's oldest tourist destination for a reason.

Sounds like you had a great trip! I definitely want to head back there. Sooner the better.

I'll second you on that one, you really get a shock when you see that Hookahs for sale on the internet for $70 can be purchased in Egypt for $10. There are shishas for sale in every second shop in Egypt, so there are literally millions of them everywhere. To be honest though, most of the Hookahs I had in Egypt at Cafes and Restaurants tasted like crap. Dubai was the place to be for nice Shishas.

True Nidal. I was in egypt for 3 weeks, everything dirt cheap but the shishas are SHITE, is an understatement. Its because everyone only smokes saloum really and they sorta pack the molasses like saloum, no proper holes just a few daggers of a knife haha and packed like a mountain with foil on. No wonder it tastes like socks. Plus everywhere it is so busy they just dont have the time to pack a proper bowl or something and it costing about 4p/8 cents (the cheapest i had! BEAT THAT haha) got by with our broken arabic really. 4p is just worth them slamming baccy on and sticking some coals on and saying smoke! Its not economically viable there either for them to put effort in bowls. Sure a bowl costing 20 dollars you have the right mind to spend some time with, but 4 pence? whos gonna complain whatever it smokes like! Pity tho when there are so many sheesha shops and cafes and sellers around. Al Fakher was good price aswell in the markets, cheapest i found was 500g for 10 dollars, which is good as it is rare to find AF in a place drowning in Nakhla.

Yah, most shops did taste not so great but a few were nice. They use too much tobacco and it gets stuck to the foil and burns. they also use too much coal, but I didn't care, I loved it and had a blast. For what its worth though I can go to a hookah bar here in Houston and pay $15 for too much coal, bad tobacco, and a harsh smoke...So the 20-40cents I paid to smoke in Egypt was well worth it :-) Besides, we all know that no one can make a hookah like the HookahForum members can :-) Anyway, here is a pic of the brass hookah I picked up. Quality piece and it breaks down for easy transport. Let me know what you think. I also have another cheaper hookah I picked up. I'll snap pics later of that.

Yes, it was very cheap in Egypt. I had no problem being a westerner in Egypt. I talked to many people and they all seemed to love America and the American people, but they did not like our Government. The problem with Egypt (and we have this problem in America too) is that their media is filling their heads with crap about America. They think so many ridiculous things about Americans, most of it is rather comical. Alot of ideas and opinons of Americans come from the movies over there. If I had a dollar for everytime someone in Egypt told me "well Americans do this or Americans are like that...I saw it in a movie" I would be rich lol.

Take care,
Michael

Great looking hookah! I wish I had a solid brass hookah. Let alone a $20 solid brass pipe! Looks a little tilted smile.gif Yea, I'm just expressing my jealousy. Since most egyptians are standardized with sizes, getting a different base shouldn't be difficult at all.

now you kinda know how a canadian feels when they meet an american.
ive had americans ask me the weirdest crap that they thought about canada like everyone gets free post secondary education (they said they heard this on the news).. amongst other things... lol

Junior college education (high school part 2) is cheap enough as it is.
If I ever go to Canada again (haven't been since Expo 86) I'm putting on an accent, I hear Americans get treated like DOG SHIT in restaurants and in general. I wonder if people realize that a lot of Americans are independent from the government, its foreign policy and the ignoramuses that think America is the greatest and are uneducated themselves. OK sorry for the threadjack.

are you serious?
ive met tons of americans that are visiting toronto (for work or pleasure) and are at the clubs that i work at and they all said the same thing about canadians; we are some of the nicest and polite people that they have ever met. lol.
bad service at a restaurant could happen to anyone. i dont think it would have to do with whether the customer is american or not. waiters and waitresses tend to be rather moody anywhere you go.

LOL yeah I had the same attitude, it was so cheap you don't really care that its crap. And Al-Fakher was non-existent when I was there (December last year). Other than that it was a fantastic country to visit.

What hookah bars do you go to in Houston?

Yep, Egypt is definitely a blast. I found Al Fakher but it was just slightly cheaper than here in the states, not worth stocking up on. I found one bar in Alexandria that served Al Fakher as well. Anyway, in Houston there is a big cafe/hookah lounge/rest I think on Richmond. Maybe its Cafe Layal?? Does that sound right? If you are on Hilcroft and you take a right at the Smoke Dreamz shop (I think this is Richmond) it is down that street. It is always packed and I believe they have belly dancers sometimes too.

Michael

Yeah, I've been to Cafe Layal before. Their food is actually really good, the hookah...its alright. They only have like 4 or 5 flavors. Good smoke, but not that great flavor. Never been able to get it out of them what brand it is.

Oh, as far as the tilt goes, that was my non picture taking abilities and my non cropping abilities that did that, the hookah sits well :-)
