amnite
QUOTE (aldonb1 @ Oct 3 2007, 08:55 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>nice statement cymptom. As to the *smokers cough* i personally believe this is due to hookahs producing a different composition of "tar" while compared to cigarettes. This is due to the shisha baked and releasing vapors instead of the tobacco being burned in a combustion reaction. Personally I am really interested in the composition of hookah tar, no study has been done on it as far as I can tell. I'm actually applying for a grant from school ($1500) to conduct research on the tar. Plan on doing standard stuff: composition, volume, density, etc. I plan on comparing the composition to known carcenogenes. (Luckly I get access to our schools bad ass mass spec). I hope to do this for: Al Amir, Al Waha, Nakhla, Tangiers, Afzal. Using quicklights (3k), japs (Starlights or Easy-Lights), and natural finger coals (Nour finger). I'll submit my proposal up here whenever I finish it and have my mentor look it over =)... sorry for getting a bit off topic.time to go smoke some tangiers mint mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... This is exactly what I wanted to know for months! Finally someone has picked up on this and Good luck to you in researching this.. kornkitten42
People who say that smoking hookah is healthier or safer are just trying to make themselves and possibly others feel better about their actions. These people will get defensive and angry if you try to despute this fact.Anything you put into your lungs that isn't supposed to be there, has the potential to cause negative effects.People just want justifications in their actions. Everything and anything related to smoking is frowned upon. They say that it's better because it's not an acutal cig. I attribute this attitude to the whatthefxup and anti smoking campaigns that are crammed down everyones throats. So many people are craving approval / justification, that they will say and do anything to get that approval. No matter is the information spewing from their mouths, is wrong. anathema
But I think I'd choose hookah over cigarettes since I wouldn't be addicted to nicotine, coughing out tar, spend more money, and breathe poorly?(i can't think of that term where you lose your breath easily) amongst others that I don't know of or think of. Smoking a hookah might share some of these symptoms but not to that extent. If we were all to bet which act (hookah or cigarettes) would shorten a lifespan more, considering an average hookah smoker and an average cigarette smoker (pretend we have all this data), my money is on cigarettes. I'll even start taking bets with 2:1 odds when we get more research and data in the distant future.

MechAnt
Tar is not tar in the sense that most people believe. It is actually an acronym for Total Aerosol Residue. It is a particulate that is developed by the combustion of the tobacco. Tar composition in cigarettes and hookah may possibly be very different and I am also very interested in seeing it under closer scrutiny
