All,

There has been numerous comments about copper. I believe that the original Scalli's mod was made out of a copper type thing.

This still fits my bowl better than the glass one, Question is - is it safe to use the mod.

Opinions please.

Ease of use = glass.
Cleanliness/ease of cleaning = glass

Cost = copper
Easier to make = copper

I've heard of copper being horrible for you when it heats up, but it's probably the same as aluminum foil. Aluminum foil has to start to melt in order to release the bad shit that makes you sick. Maybe it's the same with copper.

I would say safe as far as heating it goes. Ive many copper cookware and use them on a gas stove, I havnt had any ill effects. But with cooper pans, you have to be careful what you do cook in them, especially if the cooking surfaces arnt lined with a different metal. Acidic foods will react with the metal. This is what would concern me the most with the copper scali mod, how that wet juicy, flavoured tobacco would react to the copper and if smoking those byproducts are any worse for you.
I wouldnt be comfortable with smoking a lemon flavoured product in my hookah

Well for anything to come off the copper it would have to be melted and cause the melted copper to put off vapor.

Since the copper melting point is: 1084.62 °C, 1984.32 °F and a coal probably burns at way less than that.

so until that new coal comes out that burns at 1984.32 °F then I think you are safe. and particles will sink to the bottom of the vase so even if you get copper shavings there is like 1% chance of anything copper related coming through the hose and into your mouth.

So go for it!

While I think the copper mod is benign, it's a fallacy to assume that just because the copper won't be heated to the official melting point, it won't be giving off anything. One has only to look at a Boltzmann distribution to see that things aren't that black and white.

Cause some people like to make it themselves. But you are right, the chance could be a little iffy. Maybe another metal would be better. Admantium maybe? tongue.gif

I was thinking that it would have to liquidize first too but then someone said something about cooking with copper pans. I know that all pots and pans that are copper need to be lined with a different metal because of something in the copper that is released when it gets hot and after already voting for safe I'm kinda thinking otherwise because yes the copper melts at a high temp but what about other things in the copper that were used in making the cap itself? I know that there has to be something else in there that it was soaked in during production... I don't know... you're not dead or having any health problems right? if not i wouldn't worry about it. yet.
