MechAnt
Or, what many traditional people do, is jam foil between the stem and the bowl. My local lounge does that and it works just fine.
SafeSearchOff
electrical tape. i don't even have a grommet on my al fakher hookah - the silicone grommet is too thin. the elecrical tape works so nice.
staygone
Take some paper towel and wrap the top of the stem. What is good about this afterwards is that the towel absorbs all the runny shisha juices, and you can just throw the towel away. I don't even use grommets anymore.-QM

Dr. Atkins
Bump to the electrical tape. Works much better than teflon tape, IMO.

john_smith
What about replacing a broken vase grommet? Mine pretty much disintergrated on my pipe's second use ($25 POS from eBay). The grommet is clinging to life at the moment, and I feel its total and utter annihilation can't be far off. Has anyone had to jury-rig a replacement vase grommet? MechAnt
What I've done in the past is get a wide (i'm talking VERY WIDE) rubber band that sits firmly on the stem without having the fold it over and just let the weight of the stem create the seal. Or like many people have suggested, try electrical tape. The most effective I've found tho is seran wrap. Just fool around with it until you get it just right.
