MechAnt
Some quicklights add charcoal-like taste. Some don't. 3Kings, Golden, Pharaohs are among the best.
frankenstein_666
Yeah, sprinkle shisha...not solid packed and use 3-kings!
RayVer
thick smoke depends on A LOT of things... your hookah, water level, bowl, shisha, foil, hole pattern, coals...and the list goes on.If you get a burning taste then your leaving it on one spot for too long (or you have bad charcoals). Try rotating the coal around the edge of the hookah. Move it every 10 minutes as you smoke. The more juicy shisha you have in your bowl the more smoke will come out but if you put too much or pack it too hard then you burn it. Also try one foil, I like putting 2 foils sheets on shisha like tangiers which requires little heat but for the most part everything else I stick to one.Read up on different foil patterns people have done. Also your hole sizes matter. A fork might be making too big of holes. Do your tongs have a poker? Try that. If not look for something else to poke holes. Generally if you have big holes then you make less holes, small holes then you make more holes.Hope that helps. New2Hookah
Try to leave a gap between the foil and the shisha. Maybe add an extra layer of foil? Charcoal taste is almost always due to too much heat
nofrendo
Are you by any chance using Romman quicklites? This is a common problem among new smokers and you will never get a good smoke from them... possibly a decent one with experience. My advice is to ditch them and get some jap coals or exoticas... and if you must have QL's try Goldens or 3kings

Generally if you have big holes then you make less holes, small holes then you make more holes. The pokers that come with some tongs are absurdly wide. I would recommend trying a safety pin. I have one threaded onto the little ring on the end of my tongs, and I just open it up to poke holes, then close it back up. Works pretty well. (A sewing needle will work, too.)
