University Outlawing Hookah's...

Recommended Posts

OK well, my University is having a meeting concerning the campus polices split decision of weather or not hookahs should be allowed on campus. The only policy in our handbook that comes close is that drug parafinalia is illegal. My argument is that hookahs have been around for hundreds of years for smoking tobacco, and anything can be used to smoke pot out of, apples, soda cans, paper cigarette wrapping paper. Does anyone have any good arguments i could use to show that hookahs are perfectly legal and do not promote marajuana use? That is their main argument. if anyone can think of anything or find anything please let me know ASAP!!

ever since i started smoking hookahs we have had 5 purchases and we all got together this weekend for alot of fun 7 hookahs and 20+ people. As an RA this was great to have that many people out socializing, its not easy to do.
Thanks again. Edited by evatall

Are they outlawing Hookah as in the device? or the smoking?

Well if it ties to just the hookah, im sure you could drum up a cultural/racial argument rather easily lol.

Other points of focus are, if they can outlaw hookah then why are cigarettes or cigar's allowed?

Although that second argument could open you up to the whole no smoking in residences thing which would pretty much apply to cigarette's i'd imagine.

if they want no smoking indoors, then i am not sure if you have any recourse, since the smoke you exhale from the hookah would probably be treated the same as cigarettes/cigars.

Now if your smoking outdoors, and they want to ban the idea of having a hookah within residence, you could simply argue the whole its only flavoured molasses and win rather easily. (i would hope)

evatall,
We have helped fight issues like this in the past and would be more than happy to work with you and share whatever research we have already done. If you're interested PM me or call us on Monday 800-507-0399 and we'll try to pull up our old research and help you put together a strong argument.

While I am not a huge advocate of this method, if you can find someone of middle eastern heritage who can legitimately claim cultural tradition, that might be one possible avenue. Universities today are so politically correct/sensitive, you might really make some inroads here. Local media is always quick to jump on cases like this as well.

good possibility.... i suppose they cannot only allow it to one group of people after that....

I thought about the news media.... tomorow they will have a ruling this process started friday and ends monday.... but we are allowed to appeal and we plan too the media migt help there... unfortunatly i am also not a fan of the first method but we may have to do it.

If the ban Hookahs, then they have to ban Cigarettes and Cigars and Pipes and lighters as well. It's only fair. Ohh, and candles, they produce carbon monoxide probably so you can smoke one of them.

We we said before smoking is smoking.

Hookahs have been banned on campus at my university (University of Miami) for the last 2 years. I've been threatened with a "write up" at least 3 times. Usually I just do it on my roof so that no one is the wiser (or inside). Edited by digitalhifi

all i gotta do is show the officers the box of tobacco and its good to go. usually they come back sneak a puff and go away...people smoke ciggs big deal. but in a dorm room i can see why hookahs can be dangerous with the coals and wat not and most of the time ciggs aren't allowed in dorms but i hope all works well with you dude...people just dont appreciate greatness sometimes hmmphhh

well, if it doesnt work out, just rig a smoke detector cover, and throw open the windows. my brother's old dorm retricted smoking in his dorm, so he just moved his bed next to a window and blew out the window... lol.

no one is the wiser!

i hope it all works out too.... unfortunatly i am an RA in my building... open door policy and if i got caought smoking in my room.... bad things would happen.

So I grant you that I have no idea what an 'RA' is...

But what is this open door policy? What if one likes to dress in one's wife's undercrackers whilst being whipped and forced to clean her stilettoe's with one's tongue?

Open door sounds like a bad idea tongue.gif

lol sorry

RA resident assistant/resident advisor

im the guy in the building that has to yell at people and my boss yells at me if my door isn't open very much and if my door is open i dont want people to see my aparatus for covering the smoke detector. i suppose it could b removeable but still not very fond of the idea. Most people that cover their smoke detectors are pot smokers and are traeted like it... campus police ETC.... so yeah

i may need to employ Social Smoke. George Mason University has already banned hookahs in residential areas, IE, near dorms. So to smoke one I need to go out in the open etc etc. While it is not a HUGE deal it is very annoying to lug everything around to the middle of an area etc etc etc. its bs hardcore. people can smoke cigars, cigarettes, pipes....but not hookah. those bums!!

yea where do u live in nova? when you come home you are meeting up with the forum gang for sure.

On rt 50 on th ffx loudoun county border. Definatly need a meet up this summer.

Any way the ruling today was good i guess.... it was really a no descision type of thing. I think they officially frown upon it and would like us to make sure we use less lingo. So use "flavord tobacco" instead of "shisha" etc. and make sure we educate any odd looks we get. I think i might get a sign that says NOT DRUGS FLAVORED TOBACCO and put it on the table whenever we go out. so it sounds like it will just stay like it is for now. I think we may start putting the hookahs on the bench seat away from the traffic so less people see or on the ground but most people have short hoses. but regardless this is not over im sure as some opposers are still fighting it.
