Water pipe use as addictive as smoking

MEMPHIS, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- University of Memphis researchers say the use of water pipes, also known as hookahs, hubble-bubbles, narghiles, shishas, gozas or narkeelas, is increasing.

Dr. Wasim Maziak of the University of Memphis and colleagues searched for published and unpublished water pipe cessation trials in any language -- especially in areas of the world where water pipe use is widespread, but could find none.

"As water pipe use is increasing throughout Europe and North America it is very important that we initiate comprehensive research efforts to combat this looming epidemic," Maziak said in a statement.

Maziak said many believe that because the tobacco smoke is drawn through water, it is less harmful, but the evidence accumulated so far does not support that assumption.

It also appears that using a water pipe is as addictive as other forms of tobacco smoking, Maziak added.

The findings are published in the Cochrane Library.

I've never had a problem when it came time for me to quite smoking, like when I travel on "missions trips" which I do often. Hell, my grandfather smoked 3 packs a day for 15 years, his doctor said quit, so he threw'em out and that was it. None of that nicotine patch crap....of course he is also more man than most people. I've seen him slice his hand clear down to the bone and just wrap it with duct tape and paper towels heheh. But yea, I spend between 2 weeks and 6 months in other countries where I'm asked not to smoke and I've never had a problem with it so. I say screw addiction, it's all in the mind tongue.gif

well of course it does, but I've never had to have some "great battle!" with nicotine, and neither has my grandfather or my great grandfather who are both still alive no less. But my mom on the other hand cries, and yells about how hard it is, and blah blah blah we don't know how it is for her and this and that. So yea, in my experience the physical addiction only makes up for 10%, while the mental addiction is 90%, which I have no problem overcoming.

Define addiction?

Addicition can be 100% psychosomatic and that is probably where nargile additiction comes from. However nictone is a know physical addictive substance and subsequently some people could be hyper sensitive to it.

It's smoking - and it ain't gonna be good for ya tongue.gif

we all knew there was nicotine in it, but it`s definately not as addictive as cigarettes. people probably get more
"addicted" to the atmosphere it creates, a very relaxed one.

thank you. this is what i have thought the whole time.

we all know it is addictive, and we all know it is bad for us.

as addictive as cigarettes? probably not. as bad for us? probably not.

(though on a side note, this is the first time i have ever felt the effects of smoking hookah.. after a good 2 years i finally started coughing about 2 weeks ago for no reason.. stopped smoking and it started to get better. then i smoked tuesday night and hey.. more coughing:( )

I havn't smoked since last friday... or maybe saturday... but i don't have an undying urge to light up a bowl all the time... I don't think there's even enough nocotine in tobacco to become addicted, and i have heard that it is water soluble as well.

ALright, i just heard someone say that. I actually think it was a guy at the smoke shop.
I smoke every friday, because that's when all my friends come up to my house and we sit in my garage and have a hell of a time. I love it. And when someone doesn't wanna puff, it's as simple as that. Sometimes people don't feel up to it, but i've never had the itch to smoke.

If someone set up a bowl everytime i wanted to smoke, and filled the vase, and got the coals going, and kept em rotating, i wouldn't even smoke more. it ruins the whole aspect of the Hookah.

Hmm, this is an interesting subject. When I first started hookah, it was all I could think about. A couple months after that, I got used to the entire thing and could go on to other things. Purely psychological for me.

Nicotine is water soluble. My source: Eric (Tangiers) himself. It leaves your body in your urine and is completely flushed out in a matter of a couple hours. Try smoking a shisha that gives a mild buzz except use warm water in the base. It dissolves more nicotine when its warm and you might not feel any buzz at all. That's why Eric recommends smoking Tangiers with room temp water.

It's easy for me to pass up a hookah for a week at a time.... never have the need or crave for hookah. I do it merely for social fun... So no addiction here.

I always use warm or hot water in my base to try and scrub at least some of the nicotine out. I'm not a huge fan of a tobacco buzz, I just like the flavor.

On nicotine itself, from Wikipedia:
Nicotine is a hygroscopic, oily liquid that is miscible with water in its base form. As a nitrogenous base, nicotine forms salts with acids that are usually solid and water soluble. As shown by the physical data, free base nicotine will burn at a temperature below its boiling point, and its vapors will combust at 95 °C in air despite a low vapor pressure. Because of this, most of the nicotine is burned when a cigarette is smoked; however, enough is inhaled to provide the desired effects. Edited by BrotherBuford
