Setting Up A Hookah

Me and my friends have tried to setup a hookah over 20 times.Everyime we set it up it we either dont get a lot of smoke or it becomes harsh very quickly. I am using a mya QT. How much tobacco are we supposed to put and how many holes are we supposed to poke and how much water are we supposed to fill the base with?? What am i doing wrong??

I just bought a mya qt and i filled the water so it goes 1 inch above the stem and i filled up the bowl with flavor, i covered it with aluminum foil and i poked holes all over and i used 2 pieces of japanese coals and when i smoked it it was harsh as hell and i just got a little bit of smoke. Whats wrong??

You may be overpacking. Since its a smaller hookah, have the water level about 1/2 inch over the stem. Also, when you pack it, break up the tobacco and sprinkle it in and leave about 5mm between the tobacco and the foil. When you light the coals, blow off the silver coating.

What about poking the holes. How many holes am i supposed to poke??

What I like to do is poke holes in a # pattern with a toothpick. I saw it when I started hookah and I've used nothing else from then on.

I'm going to have to try this # pattern in my foil tonight if its what you say it is then i think I'm in for a treat.

I swear by it. It really does wonders. Enough air gets thru but not so much it dilutes the smoke. Amazing

I argree this way really works well for me when I am not using a phunnel. I call it the pound sign method - I think it's from HookahCulture.

Dang, I am gonna try that tonight. I mainly use the funnel but I pull out the clay egyptian once in a while.

Also what coals and how many are you using?

I've seen people put two 3-kings on a mya qt (cuz they saw ppl doing it with their bigger hookahs) and then wonder why it's tasting harsh when they do it.
