That Horrid Milky Taste

Recommended Posts

Every once in a while when I'm having a smoke, the smoke will harsh up, then smooth out again, but taste like sour milk for the rest of the smoke. I'm not quite sure what causes it, but it pretty much ruins my day. Any one else have this issue?

From what I remember, Nahkla and Layalina seemed to be the only ones I noticed it with. It could be some residue in the hookah, but I am fairly fastidious in regards to keeping my hookahs clean. I scrub out the stem and vase every 4 smokes, and rinse them every smoke. The hoses I rinse every time, and I run lemon juice through them about once a month.

That is a good point, I try to scrub them every time, but there is those corners in the hollow of the bowl that are impossible to get to...

Did you stop smoking and move your coals around when it harshes up? Sounds like it may just be a burned spot that you just keep smoking past. Try taking off all of the coals, cool the bowl off by blowing through the non-bowl end, and then putting the coals back on.

I do tend to move the coals, depending on the size of the bowl. I've never tried cooling the tobacco before though. I rarely get a real burn, I keep the optimal distance between the shisha and the foil. There is the rare occasion when I let my roommate set up the bowl, and he thinks he knows how to smoke, and sets it up all wrong. But the result of that is that burned taste, not the milky taste. I think Dekon may have hit on the cuase, may have some issues with stale or even molding juices under the grill of the bowl on some of them. Heating up to a certain degree may be burning them, and releasing that horrible taste. Just a guess, but im gonna go soak the bowls in something. Any idea what would be good? I use white vinegar on my tea equipment, and lemon juice with my stem, hoses, and vase. I am a little worried both of those would soak into the bowl, being made of a porous material, and leave a flavor.

*Edit* Looks like I got my answer while typing the question. Thanks! Edited by Geiseric

What flavours are you smoking? In addition to Bipartates input. If you were smoking a tobacco with more than one flavour or some such you could have burned off one flavour by getting it too hot and being stuck with one of the remaining flavours. This sounds strange I know, But I;ve gotten bowls of say chocolate mint too hot, and it seemed to burn out the chocolate faster, if not tended to quickly, and leaving almost a solid mint taste still going.

Yes, I've had this problem before with Nakhla Strawberry. It is the only flavor I've been able to smoke with my hookah until my Zaghloul arrives. Lately though, after getting the hang of the hookah, I don't have that issue. I'm not sure why it'd happen. Btw, my hookah is NEW so it can't be hookah residue.

Nakhla strawberry tastes like that all the time. Worst flavor i've ever smoked (next to a mix where my friends girlfriend just shoved all the shisha into the bag without making it neat creating a lemon, strawberry, mint, cola, and other flavors that they smoked previously because they never cleaned their hookah). *shudders* angry.gif

Yeah, I had some of that strawberry. Couldn't stand it long enough to get the milky taste. The stuff tastes like you are eating a bar of ivory soap. I seem to notice the milky taste mostly in Nahkla Coffee Molassas, Nahkla Caramel, and the odd fruity Layalina flavor. I've also noticed its not affected by how i set up the smoke, rather it seems to be confined to individual boxes i.e. the most recent box of Nahkla Coffee, but not the last.

I did boil the bowls, and scrub out everything. They smell nice and clean biggrin.gif . I'm going to try a bowl of Layalina with it after I get back from class.

I don't think it's bowl. It doesn't keep aromatic molecules at all (especially if it's glazed). If you have ever smoked hookah with a little milk in the base, and the thing has gotten into your hose, it might be the case - sour milk taste is really hard to wash out.
If you have never used milk, your hose might be old. My friend has a hose that's old and stinky! He never really took care of it.

In both cases - try using a different hose and see if there are any changes. And clean your Hookah really hard; try putting Lime or Lemon juice in the pipe and let it sit (and YES - oxidize) for about 3 hours; then thoroughly clean with Lime or Lemon juice and rinse with water before using the new hose (because if the pipe is causing you trouble, the nasty smells will transfer to the hose and stay there for a long time).

I do clean my hoses A LOT. I also scrubbed the hell out of everything, and my hoses are washable, so I filled them with lemon juice and shook them for about 30 minutes, then rinsed them with hot water and soap, then just water again. I still noticed the taste last night with the aforementioned coffee. I also have noticed it with new hoses. Thanks, though. I'll post what happens with my scrubbed clean (again) stuff later.

Hmmm...
No problem. smile.gif
Try Oxidizing the damn thing. Gets rid of all the smells and that molecular cover on the copper piping.

Ok, tried a completely scoured everything (cleaned everything, you name it, with lemon juice and soap) and still got a little of that taste. I think it is the shisha, must have gotten a few bad batches. I have really sensitive taste and smell, and often taste the bad taste way before my friends, or sometimes they don't at all. It has been veriefied by a few of my friends though, so its not just me. I'll just wait untill I get some new stuff in. Thanks though.

Oh, Shit!
Listen to this. I remembered something.
Once, i have tried several flavores of Nicottine-Free tobacco. Well, it gives this weird soapy taste and the water actually bubbles as if from soap! After a few sessions i tried to load normal shisha. Guess what - the pipe gave off this soapy flavor for a long time afterwords.

Oh I get that soapy taste all the time, but I've never tried herbal. Never been temped. I like getting buzzed off my ass. Half the time I get the soapy taste just becuase its p.o.s. shisha, but sometimes acclimating it helps for me. But that is a different taste than this, this is more of a stagnant taste. I have a new batch of Laylina Fruit Mix (or something along those lines) I have acclimating right now. I am going to give it a good 3 or 4 hours and then give it a run.

I hope you find some better batches. I do know that i'm getting tired of smoking mint. I can't wait to throw away the 125g's of nakhla strawberry. They really should discontinue that flavor till they come up with a better flavor for it.

Funny though...

Some people feel that nahkla strawberry is one of the most 'authentic' strawberry tastes available.

I've not found a better one to date.

You gotta agree that shisha production isn't at the top right now. You can take any company and at some point you'll get a bad batch. A good idea is to order several favorites at once, to lower the probability of getting a horrible batch. happy.gif

I'll try setting up shop (Like setting up my hookah to smoke.) and see if the flavor still tastes like a foot lodged into a butt angry.gif .
