Does Length Affect Anything

Well, i kinda explain it like this, the big hookahs hit like V-8 engines, longer slower pulls, the smaller ones are like souped up nissans, higher pitch, faster pulls. They'll both get you where you are going....

What? That totally doesnt explain it. As long as the downstem is not the smallest passage in the hookah makeing it 10 or 20 inches longer wont make the pull harder.

I'm pretty sure it's "supped up" not "Souped up" tongue.gif. I never smoked out of a large hookah only a medium sized one about 20 inches or so, also smoke almost daily on my QT.

cool. ill try learn how they do it at the hookah bar then! the only thing that puts me off is that at the bar it lasts 2 people over 2 hours.

What? That totally doesnt explain it. As long as the downstem is not the smallest passage in the hookah makeing it 10 or 20 inches longer wont make the pull harder.



sure it will..longer pipe means the air has to travel through the restricted space farther, thus it takes more suction. Also larger hookahs tend to have more water and larger vases, so you have to pull a little harder against the pressure. Atleast that's my experience with my 34" vs say my QT.

Well, it is indeed the restricted spaces that are affecting your pull. I dont know about yours but none of my hookahs are even close to being a point of restriction, so the pull is not affected.

You are right about the base, with bigger hookahs people tend to put the stem deeper in the water but that is their own error. With bigger vases you certainly have the "option" of more pull, but if you set it up with the same water level you will not.

Also I was talking about that crazy car metaphor. Totally didn't make sense.

So what sizes hookah do you normally smoke out of?

The restriction i was speaking of is the down pipe. The longer the pipe, the longer the pull. My tall one pulls fine, but I find it's a LONGER pull than a with a short hookah. Even with my water levels at an inch up the pipe as it should be.

Well, I guess your right about the "longer" pull, but thats not something that you can notice from smoking. Like, if you were to get 2 mystery hoses from behind a curtain you wouldent say, "wow, this second hookah has a longer pull," as with the exception of the first hit there will be smoke lingering throughout the hookah (unless you mean a harder pull, which brings us back to what i said earlier, and in that case the hookah should have been designed with a wider down pipe). What that translates to as you said before is a cooler smoke, and i dont think anyone can say thats a bad thing.

As for the metaphore i guess to make it even more simple you could have said that a small hookah is like a car engine, and a large hookah is like a more powerful car engine, but I dont think that does anyone anygood. Perhaps a souped up car engine could be more likened to a small hookah with ice in it, which gives it performance like a stock V8. But then again you can always soup up V8's as well.

I don't know if anyone has noticed.....
But in hookahs, when the smoke is not in a wide open air-filled space, it does not dissipate.

For example, after you take a hit, look down your Nammor mouthpiece. What's there? Smoke. It's just sitting there, un-moving, waiting for you to take it into your lungs.

This is the same all-throughout the hookah. The smoke sits in the exact same place where you left it after you stopped inhaling.

The smoke doesn't really cool down that much through a 30" or above hookah as much as you would think. You pull at the smoke at relatively the same speed with any sized hookah.

So, basically, the smoke doesn't cool on it's way down the stem too much. It cools the most whilst it sits inside the stem and base and your hose. So if you have a larger hookah, more smoke has a longer time to sit inside the longer stem, away from the coals, cooling to the temperature of the metal, which is usually less than the temperature of the room. When you put ice in the base, the smoke is cooled to a much greater extent. The heated smoke is pulled through the water, causing the water to shake and the molecules to move faster, heating the water and melting the ice cubes.
BUT...
When you finish your pull, a great amount of smoke that you didn't inhale sits in the vase above the water, being cooled by the vapors of the melting ice. So therefore, the smoke that was sitting in the base is the coolest you will get.

When I first joined the forum, I kept reading time and time again that 27" was the optium smoking size. I can't remembe who said it or why, but I def. remember reading it.

That being said, I get a fine smoke out of my old school QT. It is not warm (subjective) but it is noticibly warmer than with my taller hookahs.

I also heard that smaller hookahs allow more room for Carbon/Sulfur. I really hate quoting this stuff without sources or knowledge behind the whys so I will stop.

i have hookahs in all possible sizes and from 24 inches and up you wont really notice a difference in cooling. larger hookahs (think 36 inches and up) smoke fine as well as long as they are not leaking air. a diffuser and ice cubes in the base help too, but you`ll need a few trays of ice cubes if you don`t have one of those fridges with an ice cube machine.
