Hookah Pig
I've packed a couple more bowls, this time looser. It didn't work. I also tried lots and lots of holes (again), and it still didn't work. The only possibility at this point is that the tobacco really isn't juicy enough, but I have a hard time believe that's the case.I'm about ready to just give up and give my opinion that the Phunnel bowl is a rip off. I've blown through at least 24 coal tablets and lots of tobacco trying to get it to work.
Zildjian
not a rip off when you get it right. i got it on my first try, try some starbuzz. its worth it!

kitefanatic
I'll have to chime in again and say that the Phunnel Bowl is my favorite. I own 1 large, 1 medium, and have 2 smalls on the way. They work fantastic. I'd listen to the others and try a different tobacco before I gave up on it completely.
ZenSilk
The phunnel needs to be heated quite a bit, and when theer is even 1 coal on the foil atlleast a whisp should be coming out. Is your stem submerged in too much water? Do you have a clog in your stem? A clog in your hose-port? Try some AF in there, let it get heated up. Japanese coals do not burn as hot as QL's do. They cover a smaller surface area and are square shaped, so when you pull the heat comes from the sides instead of the bottom (curved as in what QL's are shaped like). This is the same reason why you need to use more Exotica Coals on your bowl then QL's. Try some Golden Roll or 3 Kings QL's instead of Jap coals. You may also have a crappy brand of Jap coals. I reccomend getting only the best when you are starting out, so everything will work out perfectly fine with minimal effort on your part. Get some Al Fakher, get some QL coals, check your water level and hookah itself.
thegreengoblin707
zen raised an excellent point...your coals aren't rolland, are they? never tried rollands but i hear manure will burn better! Hookah Pig
The coals get hot enough. There're definitely no clogs (or leaks) anywhere in my setup, and my stem isn't submerged very deep in the water. I have no trouble taking pulls from the pipe, I just don't get any smoke. Like I said, the bowl and the glass mod get hot, but the tobacco doesn't. I'm an engineer, and I can't figure it out. All of my friends are engineers, and they can't figure it out.I just ordered some new tobacco, so in a few days I'll see if that works.

thegreengoblin707
just as a test, can you DIRECTLY heat the tobacco and see if you get smoke or if it heats up? either stick some shisha above a lighter or plop coals directly on shisha without foils - you should observe smoke. if not - then your shisha is surely flawed. Cheese//
I don't get how everything can get hot but the Shisha stays cool.It just makes no sense.Try with a normal bowlsame shishaand see if it works then.
Hookah Pig
The tobacco works just fine if I put it in a standard ceramic bowl. I've never had trouble out of it (Hookah-Hookah) until I used it in the Phunnel bowl. The only other thing I can think of is that, since my ceramic bowl holds much less tobacco, the coals are much closer to the tobacco when they're sitting in the foil. Maybe there's a greater spacing in the phunnel bowl between the tobacco and the coals since it's a bigger bowl. I don't know...........I really am flabbergasted. Duffer
Being a novice, I don't know Jack! but being a scientist, here's some ideas.1) You stated that your set-up pulls fine, but is it pulling THRU the phunnel? Do the coals flare when you take a hard pull? Smoke test it. Get a source of smoke, like a cigarette, and try to draw the smoke down thru the holes in your foil. (with an empty set-up of course)2) The glass mod looks to be holding the foil quite high off the shisha. Comment anyone? 3) When troubleshooting, don't make small incremental changes. Takes too friggin' long. Try to BURN the shisha! If you tried the "lots of holes/4 coals" suggestion for say 1/2 hour, did the shisha change color at all? Does it look like it's getting any heat? Hot to the touch is not hot enough!4) if you want to smoke test your shisha, plop a blob in a frying pan and toss it on the stove burner @ high.....sorry. i love troubleshooting! Hookah Pig
The coals light up when I pull. The air is definitely hitting the coals. If I work with the bowl long enough,k the tobacco does barely get hot and burn a little bit. A very little bit.I get some Starbuzz and Tangiers F-Line in Friday. If the bowl still doesn't work then, I'm going on a crusade to bring down the entire Hookah conspiracy.I'm taking this to the Hill.

Hookah Pig
OK, an update.I now have some F-Line Cocoa and some SB X on the Beach. With the Beach, the bowl smokes fine. Not as much smoke as I'd like, but at least it works. With the F-Line, it's super harsh. Unbelievably harsh. Even in my other bowl (the regular ceramic bowl), this stuff burns hard.Any thoughts? EternalSoil
more tobacco! the best i have ever had tangiers smoke i had to make a little wall out of foil to go around the bowl so the coals wouldnt slide off the mound of tobacco.
