Shisha Ban

Recommended Posts

My hookah was confiscated the other night because, as I found out, it is contraband on the UC Merced campus. As you can imagine I was confused and pissed off when they made me hand it over and told me it would be a long while before I see it again.

Does anyone have expirience in dealing with the banning of hookahs? Or maybe someone can point me in the right direction to get some good arguments for when I speak with the campus officials.

If you are middle eastern ethnicity, you can always play the culture card......

Here at UCSB, you're not allowed to use a hookah in or around a dorm and storing one in the dorms is prohibited. I got caught smoking and I'm now on probation and had to do 10 hrs of community service. Anyway, they were really chill about it and all I had to do was send it to my friends pad out in the neighboring town Isla Vista.

That's strange. I've seen some people smoke it in one of the many quads at my school and no one gives them crap because hookah is EXTREMELY well known around here. As long as smoking is done 20ft or more from an entrance or operating window, no one cares. Its not banned from campus, just in the res halls.

Always, always check your student handbook rules on college campus. I can not stress that enough, colleges/universities are strict as all hell on certain things. Hookahs are probably banned because someone was caught smoking something they shouldn't have been (get my drift). This happened at my university as well. Everything we fine until some freshmen were busted smoking with a hookah in the dorm with an illegal substance. Now they are banned because of 1 incident.

A problem with that argument is if my school banned hookahs accept for students of middle eastern ethnicity
I would be really pissed off that I can't do something because of where I am from.

They are a fire hazard too. I can't remember how many times people caught their dorm rooms on fire from smoking cigarettes. I can imagine a hookah is much more dangerous.

6 students just died in a fire about two weeks ago in a beach town near me. It was a real tragedy.

On the other hand. There should be nothing wrong with smoking in an outside area with away from vegetation and dwellings. Edited by spankzit

Us hookah smokers shouldn't have to suffer because of other people's ignorance.
Smoking hookah while evading authorities is not the way it's meant to be done.
Hookah is a social and very chilled activity
it should be nothing to be ashamed of but it's treated like it's automatically filled with illegal substances.

i have a great time smoking hookah with my friends in my dorm even though it's considered illigal here. We aren't worried about getting our hookah taken away, so we're able to relax and enjoy ourselves. We usually put a thick beenie over the smoke detector just to make sure it won't go off, but either than that, we don't do much else but smoke it, lol. but i totally agreed, hookah should be enjoyed in a nice, relaxed environment with your friends.

Yeah I have a nice setup in my dorm room involving plastic bags and duct tape... let's just say that the fire alarm isn't a problem anymore. but yeah, it's so much better to just chill in my room with a couple friends with some food and drink than to go outside, especially cause it's freezing balls outside.

I just take mine down when I smoke in my dorm room and put it back up when I am down lot easier.

Maybe I could lobby to have it at least be accpetable in areas where you can smoke cigarettes. Smoking in the quad? Sounds like I'll have to bring me shisha with me when I go to UCSB for my ultimate frisbee tournament.

That sounds like a great idea. Lobby for hookah smoking allowed wherever cigarettes are. When you come out to SB, hit me up and we'll smoke wink.gif

On my campus University of Vermont, Hookah smoking is completely legal, however, you are not allowed to smoke in the resident halls, and technically speaking, not allowed to store them on campus, however, during the checks that they do once every two months, I have had two hookahs in bags sitting in the back of the room and they have yet to give me a notice about it smile.gif.

my university just sent out an email saying that a university wide tobacco ban was up for vote soon.

what the hell? no tobacco at all would be allowed to be used on campus.

anti-tobacco is really starting to piss me off. who the fuck are you to tell me what i can or can't do with my own body.

they care less about your body than people complaining.

im sorry, i am against cigarettes (to a point of course) but i do not like the smell, i do not like people blowing smoke walking by me and im stuck inhaling that shit. so its more about NON-smokers than smokers

i can understand that. but their whole push was "in the name of improved health" which is total bs

it sure is bs. i mean whatever happened to having your own responsibility. if people want to drink, smoke or whatever else it is that might be bad for them, then that is their own responsibility, as long as they don`t bother other people with it.
