ubernerd83
Any advice for smoking my first funnel of Tangiers? (It's raspberry, and I don't have a mod.)Incidentally, hello. This is my first post ever on this forum. Any fellow Naptown smokers out there? (That's Indianapolis for those of you who aren't in the know...) (That's Indianapolis for those of you who aren't in the know...)The best piece of advice would be... get a mod. The second best piece of advice would be to keep on top of your heat management... you're going to want to move your charcoal around pretty frequently to compensate for not having the mod. Scoop
personally, i have a mod, never use it.just pack it up high, way more than youd normally. ive posted a series of pictures of me packing on this forum somewhere.
mdl
A "mod" is in no way needed to have an excellent Tangiers smoking session.
bkag
The mod is for smoking non tangiers tobacco from a tangiers funnel bowl, so really if you are smoking tangiers you shouldn't need a mod. There are quite a few threads on the forum explaining how to get a top notch tangiers smoke
racemyghost
Mod = Pointless.I dont use a mod for any brand, period. Just have to pack it correctly.
ubernerd83
Well, my first attempt didn't go so well. It was fairly harsh, and there was hardly any smoke. I'm going to try again when I get off work, but this time I'm going to add more tobacco (I packed it like I pack some of my other shishas, namely Layalina) and add more and larger holes. Hopefully this will work, but it's a bit difficult to sort through so many conflicting opinions on how to smoke a bowl of Tangiers. Wish me luck. Hopefully this will work, but it's a bit difficult to sort through so many conflicting opinions on how to smoke a bowl of Tangiers. Wish me luck. Here's what you do;1. Pack the bowl full but not tight. Keep the consistancy of the tobacco in the bowl the same as if it were just resting in a tub. Use a fork to pack.2. Put the foil on the top of the bowl and slide your hand across the top so you get creases from bowl edges on the foil.3. Finish attaching the foil to the bowl and use a small fork to poke holes across the full diameter of the bowl including the center (large) hole of the funnel.4. Depending upon the size of your bowl use between 2 and 4 quicklight chinese/japanese coals. If you get a tickle in your throat you haven't packed enough tobacco in the bowl. ubernerd83
Well, I've smoked a few bowls with little success. I'm getting very little smoke and a bit of a tickle in my throat. Setup: 4 Jap coals, medium phunnel of raspberry Tangiers, Mya Diva with ice in the vase. I've mostly varied the hole setup between the one suggested in this thread and the one shown in the video that was posted recently. I've also tried it with a pair of 3 Kings coals, and that didn't help. Didn't really hinder, things, now that I think about it, though... I think part of my problem could be that humidity levels have been going up and down rather drastically here. (I store my shisha in sealed tupperware containers inside the house but smoke outside.) The most success I have had is when I use Layalina instead of Tangiers and 40mm Golden Quicklight halves instead of the Japs.Any comments?
Dekon
It might be humidity shock or what ever. Just put it in a little jar and let it sit out in the sun for a couple of hours (4 is enough). Go more if you want to but i do think 4 hours is enough.
bkag
I wouldn't leave it in the sun, might dry out but leave it outside in the shade for a couple hours preferably spread thinly across some foil or ceram wrap

ubernerd83
Well, that definitely improved things. I let it acclimate where I usually smoke overnight, and that seemed to solve the problem. I was able to get decent smoke and my first buzz in a while (I'm starting to think I smoke way too much...). Unfortunately, I had to cut it short. Can I just put more coals on a partially smoked bowl?
bkag
Yeah just seal it up in a ziplock or something and smoke it as if its a new bowl

If you aren't getting much smoke and its harsh...its not enough tobacco...adding more tobacco made it less harsh, try some more...also make sure you don't use too much charcoal on the bowl...you'll find as you have more tobacco in there, you'll need less charcoal than you would expect. Dunkel!
Stop trying and smoke something that is easy to smoke. Get some AF, Pharaoh's, or Nakhla. I don't know why people continue to buy and then complain about Tangiers. If you don't have the patience of Job don't bother with it or it will always taste like Bar b Que sauce. Just my honest opinion. I tried 3 flavors and no matter the way I packed the bowl or acclimated it, or gave it a tiny bit of heat etc. it all smelled and tasted horrible. Trying to get Tangiers to smoke right was like

Also, humidity shock will do the same thing. Personally, I can tell when Tangiers is smoking harsh to me and when its smoking harsh to other people (Which is a difference, I can assure you. ;) ). It smokes well about 95% of the time for me, 90% where other people wouldn't have a problem with it, but some people are more sensitive to the buzz than others. Most of the regular Tangiers smokers I know feel the same way about those estimates. Sorry its not perfect all the time, Dunkel. If there's anything I can do to help you get it to smoke better, please PM me.
