Why In Every Video Game Ever Is There A Sewer Level?!

Well,
not EVERY video game ever.
But lots of 'em.

I can't think of a more dull, unpleasant place to be than a sewer.
Except perhaps a completely grey room with no windows or doors.
But that fact is I don't want to be walking around in a sewer in a game or in real life.
I play video games to entertain myself, not to be transported to a place I'd never want to visit in reality.

And don't try to mask the fact that it's a sewer by calling it an "Aqua-duct".
I see through your lies.

What game are you playing anyway?

Hellgate London is in the same boat. While there is no sewer in Hellgate you are in the subway system for a long time. Every level is the same modeling, I finished the game and every act is the same thing over and over again. Its pathetic that Diablo 2 devs would claim this as their game.

I am so, so, so on the same page as you on this. It's especially prevalent in RPGs- in fact I can't think of a single one off the top of my head without at least one long, boring sewer segment, and I can think of dozens off the top of my head. Okay, Chrono Trigger. But still.

They aren't just dull and colourless- they're confusing. Having to find your way out of a maze is one thing- it can be challenging and fun. Having to find your way out of a maze when the walls and floors look identical is just garbage.

This reply is brought to you by Citizens Against Sewer Levels In Games (CASLIG).

I was playing Ninja Gaiden when I thought of it.
Capcom is an especially bad offender.
Onimusha 3's sewer section was murder

I think it's just an excuse for devs to reuse sewer wall textures and laugh at gamers. Edited by Cheese//

It probably has something to do with the fact that not many people have actually been in the sewer system, but they walk around every day and they are really right there. It gives the writers a lot of creative fredom.

Its also not like there are too many options. Theres what : Theres really only 2 options too unless its a flying game. Ground and under ground. In cities thats all there really is, under ground. you often go into caves in video games as well.

LIES! if youve played any of the Ace Combat games they have you fly inside structures! Through tunnels or inside large super weapons and such wink.gif . But i will agree that game makers use sewers and subway tunnels quite a bit, as long as its not for half of the damn game then it does not bother me too much.
