Ql Coal Breaking Techniques

Recommended Posts

Hey, I wanted to know what you guys think is the best way to break a coal? I normally use my fingertips to break it (my starbright coals are fairly easy to break), but sometimes it cracks into weird amounts, like 1/3 of the coal breaks off from the rest. My friends use their palms to crack the coals (for some reason this never quite worked for me). And if neither of these worked because the coals were hard as rocks, I've even hit coals with a heavy object, like a hammer or a propane torch. What do you think is the best way to do it? Maybe we could think of a good tool to do it, like hammering a razor blade on the midline of the coal for a perfect break. Just a thought though...that actually sounds quite dangerous

When I need to break coals I use the serrated tongs and saw my way through coal. Mostly all you have to do is saw it a little bit and break the rest with your fingers. 9 times out of 10 it comes out a good even break.

I cut a little perforation across the middle of the coal using the saw tool on my pocket knife and the coal snaps in half perfectly every time. Messing up a coal break always sucks, especially if they are already lit. Breaking lit coals is always a bad idea.

I use the circular saw in my shop. I dont turn it on of course, I just bring it down on the coal pretty hard, and it breaks them 99% perfectly. Usually Ill take a few rolls, break them all up and put them in tupperware later for use.

For quicklites, I place my thumbs on either side of the coal (evenly, so the sides of the thumbs form a line across the center) and hold ont othe coal like a video game controller and open it like a little book

edit: just be sure to have a good solid grip on the coal, otherwise it'll break unevenly Edited by Hookah_Bob3
