JakeB1322
So when I first got my hookah, I got a box of those Japanese coals imported by canary or whatever. I eventually got a box of holland easy-lights. Those have just about run out. I am wondering how other people light their Japanese coals. I always seemed to have a little trouble doing it. I was reading the reviews thread for japanese style coals, and I saw that people said they were using their stove. When you say this, do you mean a gas stove, with actual flame, or electric stove? I never had very good success with my gas stove. I found it hard to get the coal in a good position so that it got a lot of flame on it. Any suggestions would be awesome. iamscott06
Well i'll probably just end up deleting this post and replacing it with a picture if i remember when i get home but! .. I use a gas stove, i take that metal thing above the flames and flip it over so the metal sides are like right on the flame.. then i set the 3 little jap coals .. damnit this is hard.. PICTURE time!! Give me like ..4 hours!!
spankzit
I have the Canary Japaneses coals too. My gas stove came with a rack. So I just cover the burners with the rack and that allows me to place the coals anywhere over the flame without having to hold them. I usually cook them on high for about 2minutes on each side, put them in my coal carrier, take them outside and vigorously blow on them to remove all of the silver covering. My rolland instant lights I just throw away. Those things taste like dog butt.
chinamon
any stove works. i have used gas stove and electric with coil element. even glass top stoves will work but you might dirty up the glass pretty bad.ive also used a blow torch.like spankzit said, make sure the coals are hot enough and ALL of the silver coating comes off before you put the coal on your bowl for smoking. oolatec
I use a cooling rack (think of baking) and place it over my gas stove. Works just fine. Something like this:http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Cross-W...0560&sr=8-
tj154906
I use one of these things. Works like a charm. Contraband in college dorms though...http://www.amazon.com/Proctor-Silex-34101-...3032&sr=8-
Dr. Atkins
Honestly, if you use a stove, why not just go with some form of naturals? IMO Jap coals are terrible... the side exposed to the foil cools extremely fast, and they are prone to breaking while ashing. Get some Exoticas instead, and some quicklights for when you go out and about, and you'll be set.

olooko
The easy lights are anything but "Easy" they are one of the hardest things to light. I light Exotica coals are easier to light than those Jap style coals. The part that i hate is waiting for the paint to flake off, with the Exotica no waiting necessary. If you do buy more jap coals don't buy the Rolland ones, they fall apart on you, when blazing red
