.cOLt.45.
Well, here is a little back story.I used to be very very very very obese. I was 10 years old weighing in at around 150 pounds. I would get tired walking up a small flight of stairs. When I went to live with my mom she cut my filipino sized portion and i cried exclaiming how it wasn't enough. Enough with my embarrassing childhood story. Now I am much fitter and enjoy sports. My problem is that when I run, my ankles seem to hurt....alot. Even if i dont run that far they really hurt. What do you guys suggest? cause I'm planning on joining the coast guard the summer after high school to pay for college. I need to run 5 miles in 20 minutes. Which, I have the stamina for...just not the ankles

Especially seeing as that means 5 4 minute miles, and the world record for one mile is 3:43. I don't think the coast guard expects you to be a world-class runner... Scheetz
QUOTE (.cOLt.45. @ Nov 18 2007, 11:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>truewow i musta been trippin1.5 MILE RUN:(minutes)male:12:51 - female: 15:26there you goBah thats nothing. We were supposed to run ours for college sports in 9:30 for 1.5 miles. 12:51 is pretty much a guarentee that you should make it with plenty of time to spare. Anyway, ankles same issue I have. Shin splints could be one of your causes but that is normally your shin in pain not your ankles. I had to have both my ankles taped before every practice/games/run. Otherwise they would kill me halfway through. I would look into the ankle support stuff they carry at sports stores. They have a variety of stuff out there from just slip on type half sock to football style where you velcro the tightness of them with solid plastic support on each side. Now for shin splints the way you test for that is when running if taping off just above your calf muscle helps remove the pain. They make wraps for shin splints that basically hold your bone tightly. ghostofdavid
Get a sex change because girls always have it easier in our "equal opportunity workforce."If that doesn't work, go to a leg/ankle/podiatrist as soon as possible. The more time you have to work with your problems the better!Good luck, young Filipino!

ZenSilk
My Dad has the same problem, his ankles are all fucked up, and there is nothing he can do but suffer through the pain, cause the doctor says the Surgery will cost TONS of money and has more of a chance of not working at all then actually working. Do calf-raises. Stand on the tip of a stair on your toes and move up and down. It will strengthen your ankles as well.

Huskysibe
Dont forget, once you get in you have to take a fitness test 2X a year to include situps, pushups and a 1.5 mile run. Most commands will require you to PT as a group 3X a week also. Just something to think about. Maybe you should have it looked at man.

mushrat
I'll put in my .02 here as well, while we're flattered you come to us for medical advice, with the exception of Tati, we're probably NOT the best source of information on bad ankles, burning your shisha yes, bad ankles, propably not. Go see a doc before it gets too bad to treat.
.cOLt.45.
I realize that mush the reason i dont want to go to a specialist or anything like that is the cost. my dad just bought a new house (his first house)and he is having a hell of a time paying bills. So thats why i was wondering if there was anything i could do before going to a specialist. ghostofdavid
Do you have insurance? That is what it is for. It shouldn't cost you two more than a hundred or so bucks to go. If you don't have insurance, go to a county or state hospital and go for free. Or go to a University hospital, it might be free... if they are researching something, they might pay to see you. That way, everyone wins!
Estariol
Do you have flat feet? I have VERY flat feet and used to get ankle pains over two years ago whenever I was running. I've been consistently wearing orthotics since, however, and it's gotten consistently better. Good luck figuring it out!
