Another Bottom-stem Diffuser!

I feel like a jerk for "stealing" other peoples ideas and changing what they've done, so i'm calling it a modification. But the idea hit me last night while i was playing with a cork from a wine bottle.

I took the cork and drilled a 31/64" hole, about 85% of the way down.

Then took a 1/6" drill bit and just massacared the sides and bottom of it of it, allowing for bunches and bunches of bubbles.

The cork squeezes on tightly, doesn't hit the bottom of the vase (Mya Bambino). Sucking through the cork you, amazingly, get no drag in the air.

Havn't had the chance to smoke it yet, But i've dipped in the vase with water, and sucked with a hose and she sounds nice and pulls great. Will update with results.

all I can really say is "WOW"

I was outside in the wind, so I didn't see the FULL effect, but comparing to other outdoor smoke sessions it was awesome.

I tried that on my grinding wheel, it just ripped it to shreds.

Try using a really fine sand paper, the finest you can get from a hardware store, and rotate the cork on it instead of the other way around.

Tried that too. I ended up shaving it all off with a knife, best i could get.

this seems like the safest.

and its almost exactly like the store bought ones.

and if it breaks it will be easy to make another one because i have corks lying around everywhere.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM! I'm still rather new myself.

HAHA dangerous. Yeah, the plastic ones are kinda scary, but they do work, and they don't really get hot. My cork has no 'burn marks' or anything, so i'm pretty sure it's not getting tooooo hot, then again it is dunked in water.


It works really well - and if you need more bubbles you just drill more holes! It's great.

Make one, i think its worth it. And if you don't like it, take it off!

awesome idea, i will be trying this one. saw a guy on youtube who made on out of a piece of soda can. seemed like a bad idea to smoke through aluminum and especialy the paint on the can. this seems much safer though.

Could you just use a smoke screen and wrap it around the bottom or cut it to fit into the stem? I mean if it is safe to be near your shisha and have a hot coal on it I would think it would be safe to smoke through no? Also anyone tried using a piece of cloth rubber banded to the bottom? I think I am gonna try that when I get my hookah. If it don't work I will use the straw method until I find a cork since this seems to work. How is the draw on this thing?

I am on my first hookah (mini pear hookah) and my first day. The only other hookah I've smoked are the large 27" + hookahs at t a local bar. I think I might give this a try *cork in hand with drill in the other*. I hear the diffusers are a great investment.

I'm just trying my first one out...
My downstem has a bulb on the end of it, so the cork was outta the question...

I got an empty film canister and washed it out...



I got my soldering gun and put shitloads of lil' holes all over it, then washed it out...
I put a bowl grommet on the bulb, wrapped a couple go-arounds of elec. tape, then shoved that bad boy on...

I must say, the flavor's much more bolder, and the smoke comes alot thicker. Verrrrrry nice!

Also, my vase is a little off... It used to rock a little bit when you pulled, the big bubbles made my whole hookah rock, not in a good way, when you took a drag... Not anymore! Edited February 2, 2008 by D00M

Does the cork impart any sort of flavor impairment on the smoke?

I just tried this method last night and was pleased with the results. Just used my drill to make a hole down the middle - then used a smaller bit to make some holes all around the sides. The only problem was that my stem sits about 3/4" from the bottom of the vase - so the cork bottomed out on the base. The stem was not "fully" inserted into the hookah, but the large stem-to-vase grommet still provided a good seal, thank god.

I enjoyed the diffused bubble action - cant really say it improved taste too much, but I think my hookah is permanently tainted with some taste because I can't ever seem to clean the thing after use (too hookah'd out).

The sound was near silent - great for watching TV with .. no intense bubbling action. I'll definitely keep this mod going on my hookah.

yeah def the hose - drawing on it when its not attached to the hookah produces the ass-tasting results as well. i'm pretty sure that the hose is washable (made of rubber, etc) so maybe i'll take the risk of washing it up.

the only effervecent tablets I have are Airborne, so maybe i'll clean the vase and it will also get an immune system boost.

this cork diffuser is interesting indeed. i have a heeba diffuser, but kinda wish i had saved the money and made one of these myself.

has anyone tried soaking the cork in some liquid to get a particular flavor from it?
