You should really get a new one when your current one isn't smoking good anymore or is rusting. But, I like getting new ones once in a while just to try them out :]
hookah hippie
I never buy new ones as long as yours keeps smoking and its a good pipe it isn't necessary to get a new one.

When i first had my hookah i would run water through it and set it out to dry but since i didnt have a cleaning brush the water rusted the inside. However, once i cleaned it out THOROUGHLY and i mean THOROUGHLY, i dont think its rusting anymore. it still smokes and it doesnt taste like rust. should i replace it or is it all ok since i got the rust out with my new cleaning brushes
ZenSilk
Yeah, usually when you use it atleast every week, the rust can be a thin powder on the surface of the metal. Scrubbing does get this off completely, and it wont rust while you are using it, so it is fine. Now, if it was rust you couldn't remove, i'd get a new rig. NoPeace
well im talking about rust inside the stem. but i mean its deffinetly like shiny or anything inside. its somewhat brownish, almost like a tarnished color where there is some metal and some brown but thats inside the stem. is that bad? ZenSilk
Yeah it's probably bad to smoke with rust in the stem. But, it could be stained by shisha. Rust is just rust colored. Everyone knows what that is. The shisha stain would be easy to tell apart. But you said it's inside your stem, so i'd use some baking soda and some vinegar or some alcohol or lemon juice to clean it out, maybe even add some salt as an abrasive. If it's not out then, it's most likely rust.
NoPeace
ok thanks a ton man. will the vinegar and stuff get the rust out? cause ive only smoked my rig like 7-8 times and i dont feel like trying to convince my parents to spend another 130 bucks on a good hookah. i dont think they will lol. What is the chemical stuff that gets rid of rust? also whats the difference between the color of rust and shisha. Sonthert
Hookahs shouldn't rust...thats why brass is better. I like to stick to brass ones with closed, dedicated lines through the bell. I've had a couple of these for 8 years and they're fine. I have a couple that a friend of mine gave me and they are older still, and they're fine. One I estimate to be about 15 years old...just about dating back to the time when vents were new. Steel bodies and those common bells make hookahs die quicker. If you have a common bell, you'll see as time goes on, the nasty flavor takes less and less time to build up...eventually not going away for an entire smoking...its time to replace it, then. With one that might last a few years.
