Zildjian
I was wondering, since it seems we have a lot of fellow college students here, what your schools policy is for hookahs. At George Mason they are not allowed to be stored in the dorms or smoked in residential areas EVEN IF it is in accordance to the lit tobacco policy. I was wondering if anyones schools allow you to smoke where ever you can also smoke cigarettes. Please name the school, and if you can, link the policy. This is for a project and im a little pressed for time. Thanks gang!
PirateNinja415
I go to NYU, and they treat hookahs as drug paraphernalia here. here's the link to our policy on hookahs:http://www.nyu.edu/residential.education/j...ndbook.html#05d
Ooph
I think there needs to be some damn hookah representer that informs these schools that Hookahs are not drug paraphernalia. I mean anyone can make anything into a drug paraphernailia, just because it is a foreign object does not automatically make it a bad thing. shisha fan
so weird, how can one be intelligent enough to go to a university (or teach there) and yet be so ignorant about a simple thing like this.
camelflage
yeah, the key will be challenging their basis for labeling the hookah pipe as "drug paraphernalia"
MechAnt
At UCSB (Still havent seen your aunt Zild ), hookahs are not allowed to be stored nor smoked in the vicinity of a residential hall. Smoking in general is allowed just has to be 20 ft or more from an operating window or door. Hookahs are allowed to be smoked on campus as long as it follows the smoking regulations and not in the vicinity of res halls. I believe there is a new-ish member here that also attends UCSB. If I have some loose tobacco, say the Drum brand, and a pack of Zig-zags, would they be considered drug paraphernailia? I mean, both can be used for drug usage. Just like a syringe... or even a spoon. It seems hard to draw the line here.
btuner
They don't list it as drug paraphernalia, it's just a form of smoking. You can't smoke a cig in your dorm room so why would they think a hookah is any different. It's not about raining on your parade its about fire safety. You can't even have candles in dorms, so why would you think that you would be able to light up coals and smoke hookah in your room. These people are smarter than you think, and have these rules in place for a reason. if they let kids smoke in dorms they would have to be replacing carpet all the time and there's a possibility of the whole place going up if kids are stupid enough. If you wanna smoke go to a friends house or to a local lounge, thats what me and all my friends did.
Zildjian
the issue isnt smoking in dorms, no shit thats not allowed. The fact is that in residential areas a person can smoke a cigarette 20feet away from all buildings, can smoke a cigar, can smoke a pipe, can chew tobacco but they CANNOT smoke a hookah. This is what I want to change, just get hookahs to have the same restrictions and regulations as cigarettes cigars and pipes, no more no less. So mechant, you cannot smoke them 20ft away in residential areas? or can you? we can smoke hookahs on campus in like a public area (outside academic areas, by food courts 20ft away of course) but not outside my dorm where people smoke cigarettes. ( yeah i'm a dork but it's free) i also havent seen anyone smoke a hookah on campus but just down the road is a hookah pub so i'm sure it's fine to smoke in or near the dorms. you may get a few odd looks but other than that it's probably cool. Elky
I go to Wentworth Institute in Boston. Here hookahs are not allowed on campus period. Not because the school affiliates them with drug use which is what I thought when I first heard the rule, but because some kids used to go out and smoke one in the smoking areas late at night and they had a tendancy to get rowdy. Go figure. Funny story though, about a week after I bought my hookah, I had been smoking in my room. I was tired so instead of cleaning it out as I should have I just left it for the next day. Well we had a room inspection the next day and I know the RD saw the hookah, and it was clear it had been used because the ashes were there etc. So I either have a really nonobservant RD or she just likes my room mate and I. Panther
I'm at SLU (Saint Louis University) and they have no problem with hookahs on campus. Actually I'm pretty sure one of the cultural clubs has put on a hookah smoking event a couple times. Obviously we can't smoke them in the rooms, but anywhere where people can smoke a cigarette is fine. I'm not sure if they're directly reference anywhere in school policy but I even went so far as to ask my residence coordinator last year when I first considered buying one, and they have no problem with storing them in your room as long as they aren't in use.
