gaia.plateau
Tequila."Mexican politicians are demanding action to protect the tequila industry from Chinese competition."What are your thoughts?I pesonally think it's innappropriate for the Chinese to patent types of cactus (presently the Magey plant), but at the same time I don't believe that Mexican firms are being prudent in their push "to have a denomination of origin system similar to the one used in the wine industry". The denomination of origin system in Wine is a precedent for the patenting of geographic origins of wines, not the ingredients used to make them. For example, my favourite (cheap) wine is Pelee Island's Gamay Noir. Pelee Island wineries are, by the demonination of origin system, able to use gamay grapes, but they are not permitted to call their wine "beaujolais".As Mexican tequilas do not presently wield any geographical prestige (that I'm aware of), I don't think they have much ground to stand on.
