Does Adding Ice To Your Water Really Help The Smoke?

Recommended Posts

Me and my friend were having a discussion today. He said putting the base and stem in the fridge, adding ice to the water in the base, letting the shisha acclimate, etc. produces absolutely no benefits to smoking. He said that you'll get the smoking experience if you just put regular water in the base, pack the bowl, and throw some coals on. He was saying that even if it does help, the effects are very miniscule. So my question to all of you is...does it really make a difference if you do all that stuff before smoking or are the benefits not really worth it?

Ice definitely slows the speed of the water returning to room temperature, which I find tends to thin out the smoke. Not to mention it also helps break up the bubbles if you use broken ice, which I tend to prefer over a diffuser, simply because I find tends to make the draw more difficult. Anyway, even if the change is minuscule, it takes two seconds to throw in the ice, and I personally prefer my smoke to be the best it can be, so why not?

Well coming from Kuala Lumpur, its summer all year round with crazy humidity ( 90% i think ) and ice definitely helps cool the smoke. The change is noticable. About acclimation, It does not seem to work here. It just makes the flavours worse by drying it out.

doesnt need to be hot outside to use ice.... it was 51deg(F) here last night and i filled up the vase with ice. I prefer crushed ice over cubed. It cools the smoke, aids my diffuser into breaking up the bubbles, and gives the vase a cool frosty look.
