I personally don't use any other kind of coals unless I run out. I like them. They smell a bit like a campfire when lighting, but they don't add any flavor to the tobacco as fas as I can tell. I smoked with Nours one day and replaced them after they were ash with a 3 Kings, and oh man could you taste the difference. 3 Kings are fine if you start the bowl with them but they're downright nasty after a Nour coal.

Hmm...i found nours to be nice coals myslef, dense so they last longer, but you may have to ash them a little more often than some of the cheaper lighter coals. Have you noticed the pebbles yet? Those are the weirdest part about Nours. the rocks.

i heart nours. i just found a local shop where i can get 'em for $7 a bag biggrin.gif I was so stoked.
The rocks are pretty interesting.

As for the ash, I find it doesn't affect my heat too much to be honest. I usually ash and rotate the coals about ever 15-20 min though, so that may be why it doesn't change for me.

nour is terrible.

they die the fastest, smell like crap, flavor the bowl, and make it impossible to smoke if they ash over even a little.

my theory is they are loaded with sulphur, tons of it. the ash is almost white with huge stains of yellow everywhere (sulphur?). i have 2 bags i dont even use. All the log coals are crap compared to quick lights imo...

and what is up with those pebbles...screw all that.

I'm a fan of Nour coals and have been using them for years. I have noticed that I get different batches... some that smell like chemicals when lighting up, and some that smells like wood when lighting up. I use a portable stove element so I light all my coals outside. For anybody from Phx that like to use Nours, check out Baiz Market 20th st and Roosevelt. They sell them for $4.00 a bag. They also carry boxes of 3 Kings Quick Lights for $10.00, and they carry Japanese quick lights for cheap too.

I generally use 2/3 of a stick (broken into two pieces) on a bowl, and the smoke lasts over an hour without even touching the coals. Usually when I'm done there's still some red coal left at the center of the ashcake.

Excellent. If you end up going there let me know what their hookah and shisha inventory consist of. Like Cafe Istanbul, I probably haven't been to Baiz Market in about a month.

The pebble things, they are just dense ash or coal or something. If you let them cool and sit for a little bit and then you touch them with you finger, they will disintegrate.

not these..there are pebbles...I've washed them to check.

ditto. rock hard pebbles that don't burn

I use nours 99% of the time. I think they work better than most coals I find and I get them at our local shop for only 4.50 a bag, which is the cheapest i know of. One thing I will say about they arent really consistent. Some batches they are very light ash, others they are more pebbly like many have mentioned. There really ok either way but you have to work them slightly differently.

One recent batch I got though they drilled very small holes down the shaft. It killed the life of the coal. I was very displeased.
