What type of rating system is better?
I've been lately forming a rating system to use for my reviews. I wanted the opinion from the forum of what rating system would be best. This would not be reviews directly on the review section of the forum but rather for my video reviews. So put your opinion on the poll and drop some feedback.

Here is what I was thinking....
I like the idea of a 10 point rating system with .5 intervals but people seem to judge these ratings incorrectly. A rating of 5 in a 10 point system should be considered 'Average' but people seem to think of it as less. However with a 5 point system a rating of 2.5-3 "seems" much better compared to a rating of 5 with a 10 point system.

What do you guys think?

but that makes it difficult to judge a 'below average' product if your doing it from 0 to 6.

If it was a 10 star system then I think 5 should be Average, below 5 is Below Average and above 5 is Above Average.

i consider 6 average. just think about high school or college grading.

everyone grew up knowing below 70 is failing, i think it should be the same when your rating a product.

My two cents:
5 with 0.5 intervals gives you 10 options. 10 with 1.0 intervals gives you 10 options.
10 with 0.5 intervals gives you 20 options.
Personally, I think it's hard to say if something deserves 8, 7.5 or 8.5.
So, I would go for the 5/0.5 cause it's just easier to understand.

edit: why don't you use a grade system just like at school? I guess everyone had some contact with that, so it doesn't get any easier in terms of understanding. Also easy to evaluate smile.gif Edited by erufiku

I think that a 5 star rating with .5 intervals is optimum.

Out of 10, a 5 should be considered average, but when you see a 5/10 rating it usually makes your mind think that it's probably terrible, even though it's just average.

2.5/5, however, looks average and is average. That was a bit convoluted, but do you follow me?

Thats exactly what I was thinking but more people seem to want a 10 point system with .5 intervals.

My only thought is if I do go with a 10 point system then i'll have to also include a word tied to the rating...

for example:
0 - Bad
2.5 - Below Average
5.0 - Average
7.5 - Above Average
10 - Excellent

and maybe add a few inbetween. What do you think? Any suggestions?

But what are you basinf the numbers/letters ON?

Do you have a checklist? If it's tobacco, how many points does taste count for, cut, durability? If it's all going to be subjective anyways, why bother with a score? just give your over all opinion of the product. Giving a score may make it look more "professional" or "scientific" but it's meaningless unless you post what is worth how many points toward the final score.

For example: shisha
On a 10 point scale
up to 3 points for smell
up to 3 points for flavour
up to 3 points for durability
up to 1 point more for overall satisfaction.

So if it smells like its supposed to according to the name, give it 3 point.
Say the flavour isn't quite a true representation of the name, but it's still not bad, 2 points.
say it only lasts 40 minutes and your set up was correct, 1.5 points.
overall, not a bad smoke but not soemthing you'd do again. .5 points.

overall score a 7. NOW a number score actually MEANS something. especially if you list the details.

Otherwise stick to verbal impressions.

already thought of that mush.. was actually talking and planning with a few people last nite. I do plan on taking a professional aproach to this....

I havn't decided yet on the weights each factor contribute to the rating but I was thinking flavor would give more weight than anything else.
So far here is what I came up with. BTW none of this is final it can be changed. I'm open to suggestions
-Flavor
-Smell
-Smoke Density
-Value (price to quality ratio)
-Overall impression
-Cut
-Duration (possibly split with flavor duration and total duration)

I think 'flavor' should be the most contributing factor.

I'm still not sure on 'cut'. What do you guys think?
Buzz will be mentioned in the ratings but will not contribute to the score.

What do you guys think about having duration in there split with flavor duration and total duration or should it just be flavor duration?

I'm open to suggestions. Still havn't come up with a standarized way to rate hookahs & accessories yet.. thats in the works

I think cut is irrelivant if it tastes good. Same with smoke density. That's merely heat control. I can get big clouds out of any tobacco. And if the flavour hase given out, what other duration matters? how long you can smoke the dead ashes?

My .03 wink.gif

I would get better impressions from letters grades than numbers. If I saw a 2.5/5, i'd think bad and not average.

What I like about reading other reviews, are lists of Pros and Cons, since it'll tell me if it's the item i'm looking for or not right off the bat. That'd take a lot of video editing though.

For hookahs, how about aesthetics (does it look nice), Quality (how are the welds, seams, and general workmanship), Price, overall impression (easy hit, easy to clean, come apart easily, purge well)

i prefer rating each different feature on a 1-10 scale then averaging all the ratings over taking all the features and dividing that into 10 then making everything add up to 10.

it seems it would be easier

What do you think about material (brass, stainless steel, aluminum, etc).. should that contribute to rating?

Not unless it comes under aesthetics or construction. After all, what it's made out of really should only affect how it looks, not how it smokes.
