GiantSquid
So I didn't post this in the how to section because technically it isn't a how-to, it's just an idea.Anyway, it sort of plays of the same concept as a phunnel, but instead of one large hole in the middle, it has lots of small holes along the upper rim, so you can pack the bowl as tight as a phunnel, but you don't have to worry about packing it any special way, just pack it as you would a standard bowl. I'm gonna try to make a working prototype using some clay or something soon. I'll scan the original drawing sometime too, as I don't have a scanner where I am now and the original I drew on notebook paper looks much better.[attachment=758:newbowl.jpg]
Cybersist
I would be worried about getting straight heat and not any smoke because the heat is not forced go to through the tobacco...
Victim026
Not a bad idea, but for anything other then tangiers it may not work. The phunnel is designed for tangiers, the mod makes it acceptable to use other brands of tobacco which need the heat to circulate through the shisha more. The air holes on the side of your bowl wouldn't really allow the heated air to circulate through the shisha in the middle, it would mainly burn the tobacco along the edges of the bowl. But it's worth a try if you've got access to the clay stuff to make the bowl...
GiantSquid
That's a good point. Funny how I didn't consider that at all.
GiantSquid
I'll get me some tangiers once christmas rolls around and I'll see if I can make one and get it to work.
Victim026
Now what you could do is design this bowl to hold about half as much shisha as a phunnel and market it as an alternative to the phunnel pending it's performace with tangiers. You could also make this a design that works with the pyrex screen with the hole in the middle. The hole in the middle on the pyrex would allow the heated air to go through the middle and filter outwards.

I never use my mod anymore.
GiantSquid
I was also sort of thinking of cutting down this metal vegetable steamer thing I have to make a screen that would sort of snap onto the bowl. Sort of like how that combo bowl over at hookah-shisha works, only this thing would sort of fit on top of the bowl and kind of snap down over it like a lid. Victim026
That still wouldnt solve the problem of getting the air to go through the middle of the shisha as well.
GiantSquid
Yeah it wasn't supposed to. It was just that if it worked, you'd have a sweet screen for it.
oolatec
I thought I heard rumors of the Tangiers phunnel having a slight redesign... no big hole on the top middle part, but instead, a r bunch of smaller holes in it...

Bulldog_916
Form the bowl you plan on making over an existing shallow bowl then form the mounting "tube" separately, then join the 2 together, poke holes on the inside of the bowl and leave the outside intact. Kind of making a hollow bowl with a reservoir. The holes would be ABOVE where the shisha is and the air would easily be able to flow through the hollow part of the bowl, probably would cool the smoke more too with the smoke first being exposed the the outside temperature, then the drop through the stem, then through the water and then through the hose. GiantSquid
You actually read my mind on the technique for making it. I'll probably try it this weekend.
SafeSearchOff
why was the original concept decayed so rapidly? it has the same problem everyone originally thought the phunnel had - that air would go straight to the holes. that doesnt ahppen on the phunnel though if you use proper heat management.either way - its an easy mod, just like the phunnel. have sort of like a metal screen - but no holes in it. right dead center, have a small tube like a thick thick straw run down the middle - forcing the heat to go throught hte middle hole, through the shisha, into the holes. NoPeace
if the coal was put right dead center in the bowl then it might work. i think in order for it to work really well, the sisha would have to be packed along the sides and somewhat hollow in the center. kinda like a U shape all around. that could work really well because it would remove some of the problems people have with getting the top of the shisha to cook but not the bottom when smoking. try it
