Exotica Coal Problem

Yeah, my main concern is their inability to stay lit touching the foil. I don't know if it's the cold temp. or what. I dont think it is, cause the coals heat up the bowl and foil pretty well.. The windcover doesnt fix this problem.

well as far as providing great heat and keeping my shisha going they do a great job imo. And they seem to last a pretty good time. And haven't experienced any taste from the exoticas at all. very clean when smoking to me

That's why i got some, cause i wanted a nice consistant long clean smoke. I didn't get that. was long and consistant, but not clean

That's why i got some, cause i wanted a nice consistant long clean smoke. I didn't get that. was long and consistant, but not clean


well maybe give them another try with a coil hot plate. i know that works for me. I dont have a torch or gas stove to compare to. sorry man.

never got it to subside.... but i did notice that it does go out on the bottom but i didnt think that would have that big of an effect on the taste.

I doubt they're actually going out at the bottom. What happens is that since no air flow passes over the coal on the part touching the foil, it turns black again, however most of the heat is derived from the air being sucked across the sides of the coal. The bottom of the coal really doesn't matter as much

Yes, that's what i'm talking about. But, it does affect my smoke, quite a bit actually, when the coal is black on the bottom. Taht's why i prop them on my Mod, but in doing that, i use more coal then i should need to IMO.

I just used them like 20 mins ago. They imparted a SLIGHT coal taste, but nothing that turned me off any. If it were the propane torch I think you would get the same taste as you get when you smell the raw propane or that smell that you get when it's just being burned.

I got that taste for the first, maybe 10 mins and then it was really smooth for the following 45-55 mins. I dont have QL experiences to compare it to or any other natural coals save for the ones at the hookah bar. Pisses me off though cuz I still had a bit of unburned shisha on the bottom of the bowl. I would have thrown another coal on, but I just wanted to use one stick for today.

Broke mine into thirds, used two of them on the edges of a standard clay bowl, moved them toward the inside, then the other 2 edges. Then rotated a single third around the bowl until it got too cold outside to stay out there. I was still getting really good clouds on just the single third as I moved it around.

Ok, getting rdy to light up the coals... didnt find the burner i was looking for but this is a single burner stove type thing and i have seen others that people said worked that looked similar. I'll stick 2 1/3 pieces on there while i eat my dinner (in my room so i dont burn the house down) and ill let you guys know if it helped.

UPDATE: went to put the coals on and they were black on the bottom. Turned them and put em' back on the plate and in seconds black is gone... gonna put them on the small phunnel with some F-line Kashmir! Edited by EternalSoil

Hmmm, seems to have worked! thanks guys! ill let you know if its just the strong flavor that kashmir has next bowl. which will be a while...

i am glad they are working. by far the best coal i have used. i hope it continues to work great for you

When I heat them on my stove on top of a cooling rack, I flip them so the flame hits all four sides. When they are gray, I'll take them off and blow on them a bit so I see the orange. Means (at least to me) that they are ready to go. And I've never had a problem with them, or any taste. smile.gif Edited by oolatec

I've found the exoticas give off a slight coal taste when all sides aren't lit fully, but it goes away quickly for me. Haven't really had any problems with them otherwise, probably my favorite coals that I've used.

I usually make sure that I blow on all the sides (especially the one I'm putting face down on the foil), and make sure they're completely red with no black spots.
