Second Hand Smoke In Casinos

netstorm

Recommended Posts

I work at a casino, and the smoke is very bad as anyone whose been to a casino knows. I am afraid that I may get cancer from the smoke. I plan to quit next year, but have worked there for 2 years. What is the best way to clean out my lungs, besides stay away from the smoke. I've read that lungs can heal themselves pretty well, but I am still somewhat afraid that it has already damaged me. What does everyone think?

You have likely incurred some damage. But dont assume cancer just yet, everyone is different and you may be just fine, but you do need to get yourself out of that environment because the secondhand smoke will catch up to you eventually

Um... Yeah, the secondhand smoke has probably damaged your lungs. However, I doubt the damage is any worse than had you yourself been smoking something like, say, shisha.

Why do you smoke shisha if you're so worried about the negative effects of smoke? Just curious.

actually shisha does not contain one very harmful ingredient which cigarette smoke contains : tar. this is the main causer of lung cancer, so yeah i would be concerned.

Shisha contains tar, in fact, southsmoke.com places a diclaimer on their shisha products stating that: "Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, And May Complicate Pregnancy." Let's face it, we haven't picked up the healthiest of hobbies. Still, I don't see my quitting in the forseeable future.

As for second hand smoke and lung damage in general, I was told that lung tissue can regenerate itself as long as you avoid smoking, I'm not sure if that is true.

Shisha packages say 0% tar because there isn't any, but any tobacco product produces tar when it is burned. You will still get tar and other bad shit if your smoking hookah but the amount is still up for debate.

Thats right, there isnt tar in shisha, but in some brands of cigarettes tar is added. That is what confuses people. However you will get tar from smoking hookah simply because tobacco is being heated and/or burned thus creating tar that you inhale through breathing in smoke.

Bad news, you won't be able to get all of the iffy stuff out unless you quit smoking anything at all. Once you do, start doing some aerobics (take it slow) and your lungs will start to clean themselves. You'll notice that by the amount of snot you're going to be harking out. Depending on how much of that stuff is sitting around, it might take from a couple of months to a year. But you can't smoke anything during that period...

Do you guys know what the definition of "tar" wit regard sto tobacco is????? It is the particulate matter from the partial combustion of tobacco that solidifies in your lungs. You can't really "add tar" to tobacco, although some tobaccos will produce more. There is certainly tar produced by the combustion of shisha while smoking a hookah. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed or lying to themselves.

well im just misninformed then smile.gif whats disgusting is that you can take a drag from a cigarette and exhale through a tissue, leaving a yellow stain. with a hookah, no stain is left. the disturbing thing is that yellow stuff is getting into ur lungs (at least when you smoke a cigarette, dno about hookah) it could be all sorts of things such as sulfur, phosphorous, (these things are added to cigarette paper so that it would stay lit when no one is puffing on it) etc..

I understand that there is tar when you smoke a hookah but why do the packages say zero tar?

Probably because the packages are made in a country where there is no real oversight of such things and misleading packages are allowed. I am sure they are saying there is no tar in the unburned tobacco, which is true. By definition, tar can't be formed until the tobacco is burned in the hookah. There is particulite matter in hoookah smoke, maybe it dosen't leave a yellow stain on a tissue, but its there. I love hookah, and am not going to quit, but we should all be aware of the risks and the rewards.

You are correct, it is a marketing gimmick. And technically, it is true. Shisha contains "0% tar"... until it is burned. Every tobacco is this way, be it loose (pipe) tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, or even shisha. It's only because exactly what you said... loose to no enforcement of misleading product descriptions... that they do this.

Needless to say, breathing billows of smoke into your lungs isn't good for you, no matter if the source is a hookah just as soon as a campfire or a BBQ. Some people jump out of planes for hobbies, some dive deep in the ocean, and some sit back and smoke the hookah. You gotta live sometime, ya know?

That's my take anyway. smile.gif

You should work at a topless Bar if you are opposed to nudity then later complain to everyone about the nudity. No offense, but if you do not like smoke or second hand smoke do everything within your power to avoid putting your self int hose situations IE: DO NOT work in a SMOKING environment.

And yeah you smoke hookah, why are you worried about secondhand smoke? Edited by entrailsgalore

dude i think youre blowing your situation out of proportion. Ive worked in a casino for 3 years and know people that have been working at other properties for 20+ years, they, along with myself, are fine. I live in Vegas, so ive basically been in and out of casinos my whole life. Id calm down if I were you. Oh and why are you smoking shisha in the first place? There's something fishy going on here dry.gif .

My mom was a smoker of Cigarettes. I grew up in a cloud of cigarette smoke. I started racing bikes when I moved out and did not suffer any major illeffects. I like to complain I did but honestly nothing bad. So if 18 years of her 3 packs a day did not kill me I am sure 3 years in a casino where you are only 40 hours a week or so will not kill you my man. Just be glad when you are done you will not smell like nasty cigarettes anymore.

I disagree... Second hand smoke is much worse. It still has ALL the carcinogens in it even after its exhaled.

Shisha contains one, Tar and its such a small amount I dont think it can even be compared..

Agreed, a hookah can never be compared to cigarettes.
