Mathazar
I simply keep it in an airtight container on my desk next to my keyboard. Can't give you any explanations why, but take my word for it, your tobacco will be just fine if kept in an airtight container at room temperature

yashman19
I smoke cigars and I keep the smokes in my humidor at 70`f and 70% hum. - Zipcreature
Cool...but just so you know, cigars don't really get brought up a whole lot, seeing as how this is a hookah forum. I've thought about using a humidor for storing ma'assel, but then realized that a humidor is made to keep the already dry tobacco leaves moist, while ma'assel tobacco is already wet. Most brands of ma'assel should have a shelf life anyhwere from 1-4 years coming straight out of the factory, assuming it is kept in the right conditions. Zipcreature
Yashman19, Yes my point about the cigars was that it would keep them moist, and perhaps the ma'assel also. So its cool to store it in the screw top plactic hookah-hookah.com containers they come in? I've got my chunk of coffee stored in a Glad-Ware container. Thanks for the quick reply btw! I'm a n00b so I have a million questions I would love to talk to someone on AIM about the hookah! Thanks again. - Zipcreature (aim Zipcreature)
mopower84
I store my stuff at room temp. in disposable rubbermade containers , although I am not too happy with them. I have found that they can become unsealed over time, I think I will upgrade to some genuine tupperware. Eventually I plan on getting some of those fancy glass jars with the rubber sealed glass lids and spring loaded latch, I think those would be a rather classy looking way to store my ma'assel. I would shy away from keeping ma'assel in a humidor for a few reasons. *1 As long as the ma'assel is kept in a properly sealed container it will hold its moisture just fine *2 The moisture content of ma'assel is of a greater percent humidity than that of the percent humidity of what could be provided by a humidor. *3 You would probably need a mighty large humidor. *4 Almost all humidors are lined with ceder, this is for the woods moisture retaining properties. Ideal humidity for a humador is about 70% at room temperature, ceder help maintain equilbrium of the humidity. When humidity get too high the ceder absorbs it, when it gets too low it releases it. Ceder also tends to absorb aromas, hence a well used, older humidor will smell more like cigars then ceder. I like my humidor smelling as it should, not like Nakala 2 apples. *5 Cigar leaf tabacco, pipe tabacco and ma'assel tabacco is almost always of the burley variety. Burley tabacco is also known for it's sponge like absorbantcy for moisture and also for absorbing flavors and aromas. Cigars kept in a humidor that has Ma'assel in it or one that has had ma'assel in it will start to retain the flavors and aromas of the ma'assel. While this might make for a tastey experment in the future, for now I like my cigars tasting as they should and not like Havanna Special Grapes. Sorry for the overly long post but I hope yall find it informative.
Fire-Soul
Personally, I plan on keeping mine in the fridge on the basis of slowing down oxygination. The same effect that causes raw meat to spoil. Although meat will spoil easily way way faster than Ma'assel in comparison. The effect is still present. The liquids in the packages will slowly over time even if air tight eventually evaporate at room tempature. Where as in the fridge the process will be halted as the tempature would be below evaporation. But, I also plan on taking it out ahead of time to come to room tempature prior to usage. Mix it all up and pack the bowl. I do not believe trying to smoke cold Ma'assel would be the best idea. The entire bowl wouldn't evenly travel heat leaving it cold on the bottom compared to the top which could heighten the chance for burning as it seems to me. But... I am only able to think this through. I still don't own a hookah. These are just my thoughts which may or may not be entirely acurate. mushrat
Fire: Keeping it in a zip lock will also slow down oxidation. I find it telling that none of the older timers keep theirs in the fridge. Many have spoken about why you shouldn't in earlier posts, so I tended to listen and never kept mine in the there. We may all have different tastes in Ma'asell, and how to load your bowl, and what kind of coals to use, but one thing everyone seems to agree on...Don't chill your Ma'asell. Besides, if you keep it cold, then warm it up, it will sweat, and that can't be good for it. but thats my $.
