Problems with RAs?First, check your schools policy if its okay to smoke i the dorms...You dont want ne strict RAs barging in BTW find some way to cover up your smoke detector in the dorm so it won't go off. I've heard you can't remove the whole alarm off cuz I heard it sets off an alarm or something 0_o
erufiku
Residence sucks big time. Not only do you pay through the nose, they also tell you what you can and can't do in your own space. Ugh.Cover the smoke detector, crack the window open, and make sure your quadmates (whatever the arrangement is on your side) are not snitches. If you're using QL's, light them by leaning out of the window cause there's a lot of smoke. Besides, just be smart and blow the smoke out towards the window and you should be fine. shoulinmonk
got a foot and a half of snow, i know how ya feelas said, cover detector, or with mine you can take the cover off, and put the battery into the off position without setting alarm off..... experiment in someone else's room lol.honestly, i just put a towel under the door, crack the window a little, and have had no problems, hookah smoke dissipates so fast its no big deal
Altron
Yea I figured that I asked a few other people. My friend at SUNY Albany does it without any problems and uses fans because the smoke just goes away so fast. I don't mind going outside for a bogey, but its a nice change when you can relax and smoke hookah. I'm thinking about using a ziploc bag and stapling it over the detector. I think that should be fine. Also, Windows will be cracked and QLs will be lit right near the window.
Altron
Sorry about not editing... Lag made me post 3 times.Hopefully I can work out something until I get an apartment next year. Also, I'm wondering about the noise level and what not and smell. Fans? Spray? Filters? Boersnoes
They were gonna tear down my dorm this year. So last your nobody really cared no more.My room smelled like old cigarettes when I entered it, so I just "overruled" that with my hookah. It was a real small room, so it was filled in an instant I like reading a good book, listening to some old blues and smoking the hookah. It makes me really feel at home. Also, I left the door to the hall a bit open. That way an intrigueing(sp?) smoke came out of it and ppl were tempted to come join me.Always nice to smoke together. MechAnt
Ok here's the deal. First, check your res hall's policies on smoking. I goto UCSB and their rules specifically state NO HOOKAHS. Stupid me I decided to keep my pipe around and smoked inside only twice. Second time I got caught cause some girl down the hall was burning incense and the Assistant Resident Director and one bitchy RA were going down the hall knocking on everyone's doors asking if they smelled a burning/incense smell. Unfortunately I had the hookah out (which was RIPPING AF Lemon and Mint) and the fire detector covered which they saw and made be open up my door all the way. Got written up for 4, read it, FOUR violations. Technically, I reached the third level of violations and should have gone before a review board (basically means getting kicked out) but the Resident Director is a really cool and reasonable guy and just kept me at the second level which is probation for the WHOLE year. If I get written up one more time for anything, I get pushed to the third level. Gotta keep my nose clean. In short, don't do it. PM me if you want some suggestions about things. lemmiwinks
Do it at your own risk... That said, I smoke in my dorm (nonsmoking), a ziploc bag over the smoke detector works wonders. You can ducttape it or staple it to be extra safe, but I've found if you just close it so that there is hardly any space for air to enter you won't have any problems (and I smoke with the windows closed). The advantage to having it easily removable is that if an RA does come knocking you can take it off (tampering with fire alarms means a hefty fine at my school). If you're worried about the smell put a wet towel under the door, though I've found that I can't smell it outside my room with no towel. IN CASE OF KNOCK: (IF you have other people in the room they can help to get it done faster)1. Take off ziploc bag2. Have a cheap water bottle (e.g. powerade) handy so you can douse the coals, hide it3. If there's time, take the hoses out of the hookah4. If there's more time, take the bowl off and put it somewhere (e.g. a desk drawer, packaging etc.)If there are no coals you weren't smoking; you just brought it in from outside. This is more believable without the hoses and stuff in it, but whatever you have time for. Having this stuff ready can be the difference between write-ups and fines and many enjoyable hookah sessions.Of course, I'm not advising anyone to do this if hookah smoking is not allowed in your dorm... I'm just describing a hypothetical situation of what someone who doesn't want to freeze his balls off could possibly do...
MechAnt
Beanie works the best. No extra things needed to cover it, just the built in stretch and thick fabric
Tati
We covered the smoke detectors with a plastic bag (like grocery store bag) and put a rubber band around it, worked like a charm...Ditto the towel under the door, so no smells get out. Always crack the window and have a fan around just in case.Have fun!
thecoalition
when i lived in the dorms it was NOT ok to smoke in them. when i was a security guard for the dorms (yes we have security guards because im in the middle of the city) I had to bust people for smoking hookah and typically the ra's and main housing people would try to get the kids in trouble for having narcotic paraphernalia.id say check your policies or go to a lounge if you cant just go outside. Canon
are there different types of fire alarms for smoking rooms and nonsmoking. because our dorms are smoking (i believe) and ive smoked several bowls but the fire alarm hasnt gone off (i forgot it was even there)
PirateNinja415
i just cover my smoke detector with a beenie as well. I forget to have for the time, and the smoke detector still doesn't go off, lol. It's really relaxing to take a study break with friends gathered around the hookah, i think that's what kept me sane during finals, lol
Elky
Honesty, I live in a dorm and I have never had a problem. I dont cover the smoke detector, I dont open windows, hell, I even light natural coals on a stove. Granted I have a small hookah, and my RA is pretty cool. I even left it out after a smoke and my RD and RA came in for a routein room inspection and didnt say a word about it being out.If you are smarter than me, which isn't that hard to be, your best bet is put some seran wrap over the smoke detector, use a defusor to cut down on the noise, leave a indow open, and smoke near it. Also, if your RA is cool talk to him/her about hookahs, you may find out that they quite enjoy them. If it works out you might even get a new smoking buddy! Good luck. thecoalition
when i lived in the dorms i just took the battery out of the smoke detector and plugged the crack of my door. i lived in a 1 bed 1 bath dorm room so i would hotbox that shit with delicious nakhla cherry smoke
cymptom
Messing with your fire alarm is a terrible idea. Not only is it completely unnecessary (unless you don't have windows...) but it can get you in bigtime trouble. Even if nobody sees you messing with it, some detectors are sensitive to any kind of tampering (including covering) and can alert your campus safety. If it's ventilation your worried about, buy a box fan ($20-) and close your window on it. Use something to cover the portion of the window that isn't covered by the fan if you want to kill the backdraft and enhance ventilation. Don't towel your door... air needs some way to get in. And if the fan is constantly making air leave the room through the window, there's no way it could wander out into the hall through the little crack between the carpet and the door. That really sucks that some schools are so strict about it. My school actually respected its students and never gave us any trouble. I was in the dorm kitchens lighting coals every night, smoking hookah with the door open... I wouldn't put it away even when I knew campus safety would be in my room. streyed
what about smell? My parents are not fans of Hookah at all, but I have been looking to smoke in my room, how long does the smell persist?
Bazzi
careful with it. my school suspended me for just having a hookah in my dorm. check your schools and dorms dos and don'ts. BUT a piece of advice...put a towel under your door, crack the window, and if you have a fan the better. if you do that, and are quiet, you should be good. Patzke
QUOTE (streyed @ Dec 18 2007, 06:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>what about smell? My parents are not fans of Hookah at all, but I have been looking to smoke in my room, how long does the smell persist?Smell lasts for no more than an hour or so. Even less with proper ventilation. It really isn't that bad. After about an hour or so, it just smells like the flavor you smoked, and in an hour and a half or so it's totaly gone. Altron
I dunno about that... But I guess it all depends on what you have in your vase. I put kool aid in one time, and I smelt it in my room for hours...Anyways, thanks for the tips and stuff. I'm going to skip smoking in my dorm I guess... My hookah will take a back seat to camel turkish royals for a while.Anyone else annoyed at anti smoking rules?
TheAlmightyClaw
I hate that people can not live in smoking dorms, but likely I was right before the cut. Then I moved into a fraternity, and there are cool with it. You should be fine without setting off the smoke dectorr (because I do it all the time including right now and it doesn't go off in my small room). So have fun and smoke out, but just don't liet the RA catch you.(Sorry for any of the spelling mistakes, and take my advice and have fun)
Scimita_R
personally don't have a problem with this, im staying in off campus accomodation halls, so their policy is different, last time i had a room check the land lady just said "make sure you open your window when your using your shish-pipe". the detector in the room is a heat detector surprisingly same as the kitchen, the only smoke alarms are in the hall way. hookah hippie
I go to CSU Northridge. According to the school's dorm policies smoking is not permitted within thirty feet of any building. I have devised the ultimate plan and have been smoking in my room for about 4 months without problems. First thing is take down the smoke detector. Are detectors are not wired together and the only way someone would know if its down, is if they saw it down. Then I close my door, I have an apartment style dorm and I try not to bother my roommates. I put a towel under the crack in the door and prop the window. No problems at all.As a second note my RA knows I am an advid hookah smoker. He came by because he needed residents to sign a paper. When he rang our bell, me and my roomate franticly made it seems as no one was smoking. I answered the door out of breath and he said, "Damn dude you know I don't care if you smoke just don't set off the alarms" Then he asked me about getting him a hookah. Boy I am glad I don't smoke outside in winter.
