Screen or foil?

Do you use screens or foil the most?

I voted for foil because I've never had any luck with the screens. After about 3 bowls either burning or not going at all I just gave up. I'll probably regret it when I'm 80 years old running through the park naked, but its just so much easier now!

Screens, never had any problems with screens...NEVER!!!  Everytime I use foil, the ma'assell just burns to a crisp.  Terrible stuff, that foil is.  But, hey, thats just me.

I'm new to hookah smoking, and I've only used the screen that came with my hookah. I like the screen because I don't have to move the coals, I just rotate the screen and do not knock any ash off the coal. Plus I can lift the screen and check the tobacco.

Foil is just convenient for me.  I have a box of Reynold's Wrap
sitting next to my hookah,  and I simply cut-out a piece when I
need one.  I don't use toothpicks,  I use a fork to punch
small holes in rows until I have a rectangular design,  and then I
piggy-back 2 disc-shaped coals.  Works pretty well for me.  I
rarely ever burn the tobacco,  and I'm a power-puffer.  I
place the foil shiny side down because I've heard here on the forum
that it's supposed to seal in the heat a little better.  I don't
know why that is,  or if it's even true,  but I do it
anyway
For now I'm a foil man, but I only use hookah foils, because they dont have chemicals and stuff on them.
SO how exactly, do you know hookah foils don't have the same chemicals and stuff on them that household foils have?

I must say that the wind cover plus the screens are the perfect combo. as far as I'm concerned. I save my ritual for the coals.
A little extra ash on the Ma'asell desn't really matter when your half way through the puck anyway, the tobacco acts like a natural filter so it's not like i get a mouth full of ash or anything.

nope...I have a nice big deep bowl, I cover the the entire screen with chunks of natural coal and crank out some HUGE smoke. The difference is the large volume of air is still going past the coals and through the bowl and masell. More air means more smoke. A leak would just be adding air AFTER the bowl, diffusing the smoke.
There are just a few of us who like screens. But those of us who have figured them out will never go back to foil.

Whatever, foil has better heat management then screens. Cost wise, they both come up to the same, it's just time to put the holes. All the hookah lounges I know use tinfoil, even if it takes time. If you know how to poke your holes, you're on your way to a good session.Jon

jmexx: the heat management is in the hands of the smoker, not the screen or foil. You can burn your ma'asell just as easily with either if you add too much heat.
As for lounges, many of them are run by people who've always used foil for their personal smoking, so thats what they use in their lounges. People use what they are familiar with. I've seen some lounges use foil chimneys and some use metal wind covers. Which is more correct?
Cost wise I spent about 2 bucks for my screen and I never have to buy another roll of foil, never have to worry about running out of foil at a bad time, don't have to carry it with me when i travel, and it doesn't sag so i end up with bits of burning tobacco stuck to the bottom of it. Can you explain to me how reusing the same 2 buck screen is the same price as constantly using new foil?
If you know how to manage your heat with a screen, your on your way to a great smoke as well....

And I get fantastic smokes with my screen...
All comes back to the heart of the whole hookah experience, use what works for you, be it hookah, screen, coals, or ma'asell...
Though i'll restate what i've said in several posts about screens..I have a realy wide and deep bowl which means I can leave a fair amount of space between my heat and my ma'asell and still pack as much as most people do for a good 1 to 1/2 hour session. This makes it harder, but not impossible, to burn my stuff....
Though there are several others here who use screens and like them.

the truth is hookah foils will still give u alzheimers, the majority of screens will give u alzheimers, and household foild will give alzheimers, its not the addtives, its the aluminium itself, so if u have a shisha made of aluminum ure also screwed but why is evryone so worried assume u dont get alzheimers theres always cancer :) so relax live and smoke

I asked a friend of mine about the dangers of charcoal and aluminum foil.

He is a 50 year old socially inept genius who hasn't left the house for
anything unrelated to work or shopping for 20 years. He is an expert on
just about everything except women and sports. (I think one frightens
him and one has been dismissed as irrelavant.) Think Napolean Dynamite
grown up with a 200+ IQ. I have never heard him say "I don't know." He
said "I'm not sure" a few times, but then got back to me the next day
with a definite answer.

Anyway, he said that the heat generated by a charcoal would not be
sufficient to release harmful vapours from foil in a quantity that
would be harmful.

I realize this is not a proven source for anyone who does not know him,
but I trust him more than any privately funded study. Those studies are
usually funded by those that have a vested (financial) interest in the
findings. Besides, he's just freaky smart.

Besides, its the answer I wanted to hear, because it meant I could smoke with one less worry.
