mathuv
I had a couple of chunks of natural coal from a local hookah lounge running around for the past 3-5 months so tonight i decided to use some. The coal took 10 minutes to light and i blew all over it till it was read hot and it even caught fire. then I put some on my bowl and i started puffing away. within a minute the coals were out (blackened again) i didnt even get any smoke (got some nice tasting cherry vapours though ) Could coals go bad if stored in a certain type of condition?? These coals had no brand, he buys them in bulk from egypt and they come in white nylon sacks of about 15-20 kilos each (33-44lbs). I've used these when they were still "fresh" (less than a month since he gave them to me) and they were awesome. didnt take long to light and stayed lit for a good 45 mins. hshah
I usually find that with natural coals, blowing over them only lights the surface and not the inside, which is why they go out. What I tend to do is put them on the stove for a few minutes whilst I prepare my hookah and then take them off. Leave them on one side for a bit until a layer of ash forms all the way round, indicating it is hot. I think knock the ash off the put it on my hookah At the same time, I put an unlit coal on top of it, so by the time the original coal is dead, the other one is fully lit and ready to use
mushrat
Ya, the humidity I believe can effect the coals. Other than that, bulk charcoal is just a general pain in the ass to use anyways.

everydayshisha
I had the same prob with bulk coal aswell. Make a cylinder out of foil and put it on the hookah like a windcover. (most windcovers wont work) this is to create air circulation to keep the coal alive. If you dont understand it and need to know why it works, just ask. jerrysalem
I bought some natural coconut shell based charcoal. Great idea for no chemical smells, but in reality they don't burn very hot and I always have to add some quick lites anyway. Unless someone can tell me a good consistent natural brand, I'm going to stick with what works. Of course, if you light it with another charcoal that is burning on the bowl, NEVER inhale until after the charcoal is completely lit, to avoid the unpleasant chemical smoke which will ruin the rest of your pleasant smoke. Ralleac
I have that problem w/ romman natural coals sometimes if I don't light them completely. I usually heat them up until the bottom is bright red, and then flip them so both sides are lit completely. After that I toss them on the hookah and put the wind cover over it.Is the problem consistent with all the natural coals you've been using, or just this bag?
