Canon
ive only been into hookah for about a year or so now.. do you view it as a fad or something that will continue to grow in popularity?
waterboi
Canon, I was kind of wondering the same thing this past week while I was visiting some friends in Biloxi. Seems that Hookah is growing very fast. I really enjoy it and dont see myself not smoking but for some I see it being a fad.

cemab4y
Hard to predict the future. Hookah has been around for centuries (I live in Iraq) popularity is definetly growing here in the USA. With restrictions on smoking (mainly cigarettes), people may move to hookah to get away from the hassle.

I hope you mean in America only, because overseas its a part of their culture and will probably never die unless you nuke the world. I'd say it growing. More and more people are being introduced to it everyday, and I've never heard someone say they hated it after smoking with me for the first time. HarryTheHookaMaster
I think for some, I feel it is a fad. Mostly the younger "I wanna be hip" crowd. For some of us, its not a fad. I smoke it because I enjoy it . I learned how to smoke while in Iraq from some Iraqis. It was an experience....Personally, if I walk into a Hookah Bar and the music is blaring, I leave... for me, hookah is for relaxing with friends not partying.Just my 2 cents,Harry

I enjoy hookah, from setting it up to smoking it. trying new flavors and new products. Everyone I have introduced to hookah likes it and always wants me to break out the shisha and hookah. Bulldog_916
I see it as a fad with those who follow pop culture. Once a new thing pops up, they'll migrate to that new thing. Hookah is their new thing. Plus it's fun to go to a hookah bar and chill with your friends and people watch. But I do it because I enjoy being able to think and smoke and converse. Helps me clear my head and 9/10 times I end up making better decisions after a good smoke on my own.
fineout
i feel like in some circles it is a fad, but i dont believe that it will ever go away. i mean its been around forever, so im sure its not going to die out. but it may not be as super popular with so many people sometime. ZenSilk
Yeah sure it can be a fad. Smoking a cig is just so much easier, and alot of people are in it for the buzz. Some people will always keep on smoking, but for some it will just fade away and be yesterday's fun.
Foos
This has been brought up before a few times and it seems that most people consider it a fad. Id call it a hobby.

MrMoodz
I agree with RayVer. Hookah is a hobby of mine and my friends and co-workers all know to come to me for any questions related to the hookah. I've been smoking hookah for 7 years now and don't imagine "moving on" anytime soon. The hookah's been around for hundreds of years and is not a fad.QUOTE (RayVer @ Dec 29 2007, 08:19 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>+1I'd call it a hobby. With the superb Tangiers flavors I can see this taking off even more. Like I saw someone post before do we remember life BT(Before Tangiers) Great phrase man. I do not smoke much other brands anymore, just using up what I have around.
thecoalition
i think it depends on the people who get into it. for me its a hobby that i started with kids who grew up with hookahs in their homes in pakistan and bangledesh (sp). It seems though when i stroll pas the hookah lounges now a days its all kids who just turned 18 that are going because they cant drink. Also, because Richmond is a big college town the lounge owners are simply making money. All the lounges here are terrible. Bad shisha that they refrigerate and kill the flavor on. They all use nahkla and only that.Anyways....yes hookah is a fad for some, but I think the people on the forum are more enthusiasts. The way I look at it if you throw down serious money on the equipment then its probably not a fad for you.
Cybersist
When I came across it, I was being sucked into the fad aspect, I'm not going to lie. But after spending countless hundreds of dollars every few months, I questioned my faith to the hookah community. I arrived at that I do not smoke it because it is a fad, but because I truly enjoy the chilling and relaxing setting that hookah has only contributed to. I will most likely be smoking it forever... Rani
Something can start out as a fad and then turn into something more. In the US we've kind of lost touch with our rituals and are feeling the loss. Hookah has a great deal of ritual behind it from the beauty of the pipes themselves, setting it up, enjoying it with friends, the search for just the right tobacco, etc., and for me at least, that's a great deal of it's attraction. So I believe that while it may currently be considered a fad, it's likely to end up being a staple of a lot of at least the social part of our lives for a very long time to come. You don't think it's been around 600 years just because nobody could come up with something better to do, do you?'Rani
anathema
Did you guys know hobbies can be fads also? But everyone knew what everyone else meant.I'll speak for the two lounges that I occasionally go to. Fusion Cafe and Dream Cafe. There were packed crowds 2 years ago, everyone was fully seated and occasional 5-10 min waits during weekends for both lounges. It's two years later and they're not pounding to music as loud and the lounge is more "chill."So if we're talking about people in general, then it is a fad, since it's come and gone but it lingers. The MTG cards for example, it still lingers. It's only been a hobby for me for about 2 years, since I'm only 19.
zeppyrkr
kinda seems like a fad, like hookah bars, but i can't see myself stopping any time soon. only time will tell.
Anpu2
anathema, it seems as if we frequent the same lounges. I agree with you as well. The 'obsession' if you will, has died down for me as well but I will not give up my pipe, or the (at least) monthly visit to Fusion or Dream. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'd still frequent those lounges like I had in the past (weekly) if it wasn't for 18 units, a fiancee and a much lower income than I was enjoying back in the day when hookah was a good 10% of my weekly routine lol.Fad to most? Yes. But for some of us, the shisha has found a permanent place in our lives.
