mdl
QUOTE (Hookah_Bob3 @ Jan 1 2008, 09:52 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Is it fair? no.I disagree. If you don't like the price of a good then don't buy the good! A good is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and each person has a different reservation price; Ebay and any auction is an excellent example of this. If you are in a store and see a huge markup for a product ask for a discount, find alternate locations you can buy the product and see if the place will price match. mathuv
Wel the only place to get hookahs in Malta is from arabs and lounges. Lounges overcharge. $10 for a roll of 10 coals, seriously. The most expensive hookah i've seen an arab sell was $60. I bought a $17 12 inch one and he told me straight away it wasnt as good quality as the others, at least he was honest (water kept getting up the hose). But yeah Arabs do tend to sell things cheaper, I can get the hookahs cheaper, i've only gone there a couple of times and he's discounted some stuff for me already (all hookahs by $3 ) so im guessing i can haggle with him. But i'll stick to this: If you want a quality egyptian that will last, go KM.
Hexa
the arab store can be a trick. just cause these guys arent fancy doesnt mean they are better. They order from the same sites and often have to mark up in order to make a profit. I bought I hookah from there that seemed good and cheap but it wasnt really the greatest.Listen, the best measure is to look at if their shisha is cheaper. If its not you know the quality sucks since most of them get from the same distributor

mushrat
QUOTE (ams @ Jan 1 2008, 06:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I dont know but this really really really bothers me. SO I AM GONNA RANT ABOUT IT.Hookah is an arab thing, and so i have been exposed to it my whole entire life. But what bothers me is that when it took off in america people pay so much money to purchase a hookah. For example many stores and lounges have such a huge huge mark up on the items...a 100 dollar hookah, i can find that same hookah at a arab store for like 45 dollars and they have been selling it for years. Maybe I look at this differently because I have had this access, but i would imagine from word of mouth people would find out by now.Honestly I laugh when i go to a hookah lounge or store and see someone purchase a hookah for like 150 dollars, cuz i know what they really should sell for.so my point is to people...look for the arab stores, the hole in the wall store, that never advertises and they usually speak to you in broken english...ITS HIDDEN GOLD MINE...you will find tobacco, hookahs, and accesories dirt cheap. I know some of you dont live in the big cities and dont have access to this, but if you do live in one or near one...check it out.here is a funny story...there is arab store and down the street from it is a lounge...the lounge actually sells the same hookah it buys from the arab store for twice as much.......ITS SO RETARDED!!!!!!!! i understand there is a supply and demand issue and there are costs to maintain a venue..But i think its time we put these people in check..for over charging the crap out of us, even the hookah lounges for serving crappy hookah, and charging us so much, esp when i can buy better tobocco, pack a quality bowl and smoke with my buddies and enjoy myself.k end of rantI find the local arab stores to be high priced to be honest. I guess perhaps if I was Arab I could talk them into a more reasonable price, but in general I find tem to be as high if not higher than on lineatleats for the hookahs. As for tobacoo and coals, R=they are priced about the the as well, but no waiting or shipping charges. BTW, Hookahs are actually an INDIAN thing, brought to the middle east by the Turks. So.... They love to barter, believe me!!Very true! They do. Go in with a fairly set price in mind. If its below, buy it. If its above, work it down to at least your set price. Lowball them and see if they will compromise somewhere in the middle hitting your set price. Works all the time and helps you to develop a good relationship with the owner. Don't force something on them tho cause they don't like that and will build a slight resentment that you're a stingy customer

jerrysalem
I live in Prague in the Czech Republic (I am an expat US citizen). Here you can find hookahs but the prices are really not reflecting the real quality. They simply do not sell real quality hookahs here. You cannot find a good Mya here. There are online stores next door in Germany but they do not also sell the best quality Myas. For that I have to go to hookah-shisha.com and have it shipped over. Yes it is expensive but you get what you pay for. I was in Turkey last year, and they do sell hookahs there but you have to know your prices and what you are looking for. There is no such thing as fixed prices in the Arab world, it's what they can get from you. Don't get me wrong, my dad's side came from Syria and they are fantastic people, I love Arabs, they are warm and very hospitable and great to talk to and hang out with and have good hearts. But when it comes to business they are good businessmen, you simply have to know your market and bargain accordingly. I could not recommend a better place for a vacation than Istanbul for example, great shopping, food, history. So, if you want to get good quality, find a good store/online shop, pay the price and know you are buying a lifetime of great smoking with a quality hookah. You can buy for example a violin at a cheap price or pay the expensive price and get something you will be proud of for a lifetime. In the long run the legitamately expensive item from an honest and reputable shop is well worth it in terms of constant enjoyment, and from years of experience of looking for 'bargains' I know this to be a fact. By the way I have a Mya Gyro 2 hose on order from hookah-shisha.com and cannot wait to get it-that is if the thieves at the Czech customs and post office don't steal it first (I am not kidding, count your blessings on an honest postal system in the USA!). ams
I am indian, and have ancestary to arabs. I know india has the brass hookahs with brass pipes....from my understanding it was used for other things way way back. the arabs and persians used the glass bottoms. From my understanding, it originated in the mid east and trickled its way down to india..when the arabs and persians came in to rule the indian subcontinent (afganistan, pakistan, kashmir, india, bangladesh) during the spread of islam, around the time the language URDU was formed ( a mix of hindi, arabic and farsi from persians)...then the brass pieces were seen during the moghul era (shajahan and so forth), down to british rule era...who introduced and got us addicted to tea lol. mushrat
ummm..like I said, the sources I've found say it was the other way around, India first, then the middle east.

The Devils Playground
I will comment on this here. We are the most expensive shop in Vegas at Retail. I am serious. We also sell more hookahs then anyone else also. We are also speaking very clear english. And happen to be the most loved Hookah shop in Vegas. Alot of it is we have a reputation for the best selection in Vegas on both hookahs and tobaccos. We run the place 24/7. We charge $3.00 a roll on 3 kings and you know what thats average in Vegas. $20.00 a box. Now on line we strive to be the cheapest. I am always weary of any shop selling $8.00 boxes of coals from 3 kings my man. I will bet they are fakes since wholesale is more then that. But if they dont stink and they burn tobacco cool. We are basicly Sachs 5th ave. for Hookah here. You pay more but how many shops have a hookah running and extra bowls ready so you can try the house favorite at almost any time? How many slide you credit for those bad days? How many shops can you go in and have150 seleections of hookahs, and 400 choices on tobaccos?Service goes along ways. Is a steak from a steak house that much better $100 a plate VS a Dennys? Not $85.00 worth for sure but you are paying for the higher rent and way better service. When you come to Vegas you get on line pricing on everything but tobacco except 250Gs and people still walk in our doors to the tune of 60+ hookahs a month and I cant count the dam tobacco orders. I hope this sums it up for you. If not bash away. Call me a rapist etc... But many of you have seen the shop pics with the girls that traffic this place. They obviosly love us. The Devils Playground
Hell we let everyone smoke for free. This place has been slammed all week with people buring the hookah up with the new flavors. I am fine with it because Holly is starting to remember the old sahara store where everyone just came in and tried new flavors and in turn bought like fiends. lol

zeppyrkr
its our fault, stupid people like us, maybe not all of us but most of us have givin these jackasses our money. when you want something and you want it now most people are willing to pay more. like people go to a gas station to get milk and soda, even though gas stations are much more expensive its just way more quick and easier.
