Opening Up A Hookah Bar?

Recommended Posts

ive been saving my money and I have a couple other people interested, we already have a city picked out and aprox rent/utilites for the area. Plus we already figured out how many hookahs initially, and the price on all of em, ect... And the guy who runs the local hookah lounges here likes me and hes been telling me everything I need to know, but his stores are apart of a national chain that I think he wants me to sign up with... but I have aspirations of my own, however dimwitted they may be...

the Artic Hookah Cafe...

i wanna do it, and i have the perfect place to do it.

but i'm a pussy, and nobody would give a 21 year old kid money to open one up, not to mention all the licences i would have to aquire and the whole business thing.

read mush's thread (i didn't look at what thread he posted, but i already know)

make sure you are willing to go through it all and stick with it.

people here will give you all the support we can!

but i have a name picked out so far, got the t shirt design. i just need to know the location better to pick out good prices for the local area.

haha, it's a pretty good place, nothing too extravagant but its not small as shit either.

the place i was thinking of is the riverwalk in jenks.

http://www.riverwalkcrossing.com/

i know its doable because they have a cigar shop there with a bar in the back and you can smoke all you want.

last i heard they are still selling spots for "phase two"

OK laws are weird. as far as i know, bars you cans till smoke in (cause i have been in them, and smoked) but the recent (couple years ago?) tobacco smoking section weird ban thing makes you have a seperate closed off section with a whole different HVAC system than the non smoking area.

A hookah bar would obviously all be smoking section.

i'm sure if i went into the Cigarbox and talked to Mr. Foust ( i went to school with his kid) and casually talked about how to open a place like that and all the restrictions and regulations over a cigar and a few beers on a slow night i would get alot of info!

well ive talked about the prices but i cant make anything certain yet. ill probably start out higher to pay off my expenses and when my expenses go down ill lower the price to something more reasonable. i also dont know what type of tobacco i want to serve. i was thinking going with a mix of different types.. starbuzz, tangiers, AF.

but tulsa would be a good place to live for me and my fiance when we get married. it will take a lot of time to open up one. a few years, so i have time.

i like it.

many people are like "fuck tulsa, i want out of here"

i'm not that way.

good place to grow up in. good schools (not jsut sports either)

and as far as real estate goes, you should be fine. my only recomendation would be to stay south of 71st street, not that the north is bad, but the south is nicer if you ask me.

a restaurant will probably be equiped with all the kitchen appliances thus adding to cost. there are alot of little strip mall type places going up everywhere that would be more expensive, but more like what you would be looking for i would think.

If you haven't looked at mush's post i highly suggest it. it's got alot of insight. and as it says in there, you just wanna look at about the area you want, you dont need a place lined up right away, gotta have the money first anyways cause not many places will give you money for a hookah bar, not here in the Bible belt

If I ever had too much money on my hands I'd open up a hookah lounge.

It seems like a war of attrition if you ask me. Yea, Bubba was able to open up a nice smoke shop where he was able to squeeze through a loophole in the system. Congrats to him on that. But for your Joe Blow trying to open up a smoking lounge where 80% of your income WONT come from tobacco sales, good fucking luck. America is cracking down HARD on tobacco smoking. Some of the anti-smoking lobbies are bigger than the damn tobacco companies they are trying to kill off. I highly doubt any of us will be able to squeeze through even ethnic loopholes to keep a place open long term.

The WH(TFU)O (World Health Trying to Fuck Us Organization) AKA the WHO already has it's mind made up that hookah smoking is worse than cigarette smoking. Granted, there is opposition to that stance, but it isnt strong enough to overturn their misguided and horribly tested theories.

Bottom line? Better keep a fat stash of cash stored away for legal expenses because if your state starts cracking down and you try and fight it, you'll lose your ass. If you DO end up losing your ass you'll lose more than that when your investors start looking at you with their hands out.

opening up a hookah lounge in my home town would be a GREAT business idea!

it's a rather small town that's growing rather fast. it's only got one high school and NOT A SINGLE hang out place worth a damn for anyone under 21. It's got a university in it and there's plenty of college/high school kids that need a place to go hang out besides the mall (theres only one) or the movie theater. the only competition i'd have would be those two places and maybe the bowling alley. and there are a couple other towns near by and they have thier high school seniors that come into town to hang out and i'm sure would be happy to find a place to hang out that's more appealing than the local christian church's youth club. lol. plus that town has a folk fest that comes through every year and all the freakin' hippies that come from accross the state to the folk fest would enjoy a hookah lounge, i think.

yup, that town hasn't seen anything like that, and i know that it would be a big hit. idk, maybe one has sprung up since i last visited there - two years ago. lol

I thought I'd add my 2cents. I've always wanted to open a Hookah lounge, but I live in the UK and the government has banned all smoking inside comercial properties sad.gif its pretty much killed off the idea for me.

I dont know much about the US, but it appears to me that politicians around the globe are highly unoriginal, and US law makers might be inspired by Europe and in a few years impose the same no-indoor-commercial-smoking-ban. So maybe you might want a backup plan for your Hookah lounge, and gear it up as a small mediterranean/arabic cafe (selling stuff like falafel, hummus, moroccan mint tea, etc), just incase something should happen with the law. It could also help spread out your investment risk? If the Hookah thing doesn't take off maybe the cafe side can help?

That was my only suggestion.

I wonder if it would be possible to have a hookah bar thats members-only to get around smoking bans? I don't know how it would work exactly, but say you charge a one-time "membership fee" of like $5 that buys someone "part-ownership" in the place, and then have it members-only and therefore a private property with smoking allowed?
