I used to put mine in the fridge because I thought it would keep it
fresher longer, but noticed that my ma'assel started to get pretty hard
and lost a lot of its flavor.

Just keep it room temp, but in an air-tight container. Transfer it into
those cheap plastic gladware tubs if you have to. This will keep your
ma'assel fresh.

people say if you have it in the refrigerator it lasts longer...but
thats your own choice if you want to leave it in there, and maybe wait
a while in room temperature for it to become "unhardened"...i smoke my
stash fast enough that its no problem leaving it outside...

btw i just picked up a lot of shisha today, a 250g of mango, 250g of
mint, 250g of peach, 250g of grape, couple 50g's of banana (to try em)
and couple 50's of lemon....lets see how long this monster stash will
last (ive never bought this much at once before haha)

I've only owned boxed tobacco so what I do is take it out of the box(still in the plastic), wrap it in tinfoil, and put that in a ziploc bag. Since I dont ever have a whole lot of tobacco on hand, I usually just throw it into my hookah bag.

This is my first post here so I'll make a brief introduction:
I'm a cigar smoker from Belgium who's quite passionate about tobacco. I
love to read about it and gathering information as much as the smoking
itself. I have no experience with hookahs whatsoever, but it has caught
my attention. In the never-ending quest for the perfect tobacco
enjoyment, I'll consider any use of it.

Now, as for the question. Knowing some stuff about cigars, I know how
important it is for your tobacco to keep it properly stored. Cigars are
often stored in humidors, which keep them away from sun and air, and
maintain a relative humidity of about 70%. Now, tobacco for cigars,
cigarettes or hookahs doesn't require such precise maintenance, but
it's best to keep the tobacco moist. This is the most important aspect
of keeping it smokeable and fresh. If tobacco dries up, it loses
flavour, tastes bitter and is too harsh on the throat. I have some
tobacco for rolling cigarettes, and I keep it in a tupperware jar along
with a moistened sponge. This keeps it moist, making it taste better
and easier to handle. You could seal the container completely, but it's
best to keep it slightly opened (lift a corner or something like that).
This way the air can move about a bit, and the humidity remains
balanced. As long as you keep the tobacco package closed, it will not
lose flavour.

Hey whats Nekotaku, nice to see another "Otaku" here ;).I too came from a cigar and pipe smoking background like yourself and discovered hookah's through a friend about 3 yrs ago and i'm definitaly glad i did.  Muassell itself is much different than the normal tobacco per-say that cigar/pipe tobacco is. Hookah tobacco is quite wet compared to the type used in cigar/pipe.I found a link for you that a member named Cypress made on how to setup a hookah and how its smoked.  I found many users new and old found this video informative.  Here's a link, hopefully it'll help ya out. Here's a kind of different thought. If you keep your massell in the fridge, how about keeping it in the crisper with a higher moisture setting? You'd still need to let it warm to room temp before use, but it would be less likely to dry out. Also, and this is an odd one, a piece of bread also works to remoisturize many dried out things. It's basically a food sponge. I personally would just keep mine airtight at room temp, but here's some ideas to get us thinking.

Ah, thanks. That will be most helpful. I think I'll be getting a pipe
pretty soon. As for cigars, have you heard of Villa Zamorano? By the
same producer as Cumpay and Flor de Selva. Hondurese, and the cheapest
handrolled sticks you'll find. The quality can vary a little, but when
they're good, they're lovely.

Cigars are not hookah, that is true. We smoke hookah longer than a cigar. Hookah smoke is not smoke, like burning a cigar, but vaporized glycerine and some other interesting flavor vapors. Humidity plays a much larger part AND the fact we run everything through a water bath screws the science up massively.
