Poro-
Hi!Couple weeks ago I bought 3 hookah pipes from Tunisia (really cheap there, compared to retail prices in Europe)I bought 2 small ones, they are modern look and have a ball valve. If you blow, it clears the smoke away. If you suck, it closes the valve again.Small one costed ~15 euro with 2 packets of Nakhla and charcoals etc. Large one was ~10 euro with 1 packet of Nakhla and charcoals etc.3rd one, the big one, is different. It is egyptian style, and it doesnt have that ball valve. Only a hole, which you can close with your finger. Is there any harm done if I just tape the hole? I dont usually need valve at all. I tried the big one once, but in my opinion, smaller ones smoke better. Big one had a metal "base" for tobacco, and I think that is the reason for harsher smokes. I think I have to try with normal clay bowl, and make it fit with some tape. Or take the easier way and stick with small hookahs. I just thought that bigger ones smoke cooler... =)P.S. Sorry for possibility of bad english, I'm not native english speaker --Then some price levels for tobaccos & charcoals, if somebody is going to visit!50g Nakhla 0.57euro1 roll of 3kings, ~0.90 euro

But it should be fine to tape up the hole; the hole as you have correctly discovered is used to blow out any stale/harsh smoke. If you dont get this problem, then you're fine blocking off the hole.I would highly recommend you thoroughly clean your shisha before using it, that could be a reason for the metallic taste. You'll need a wide and a long brush to do this properly:http://www.hookahshop.co.uk/accessories-sp...rs-c-66_79.htmlYou maybe able to buy these from your local hardware shop. The wide one is used to clean the glass bottle, while the long one is used to clean the metal shaft. I usual use "washing up liquid" (stuff used to clean plates, spoons, forks, etc) and warm water.Once you've cleaned your shisha you should test it for any air leaks. Simply fill it with the usual amount of water and attach the hose. But dont put the clay pot on top, instead block the top off with the palm of your hand. Then suck on the hose. This will tell you if there are any air leaks. Ideally it should be impossible to suck any air, but in practice a tiny leak is ok. If you discover a large air leak, then that'll explain the lack of smoke being produced. You'll just have to find the hole and try to fix it!Also I'd say its a good idea to use a clay/ceramic bowl.If you need help, just come back to this forum and make a fuss, someone will come to your aid Good luck friend! Poro-
I tried large one today, with a ceramic bowl. It worked much better than with metal bowl, so metal bowl was responsible of bad taste. Still I dont like to smoke large one as much as small one, because almost everytime I try large one, I get minor problems with nicotine. It must be that large one has longer hose, so I need to inhale more to get taste than with smaller one.Small ones have perfect draw so I get taste even without inhaling much. Maybe it's better to stay with smaller one, and save some of my lungs *lol*
mushrat
glad the above folks were able to help. Sounds like you got cheated with the big one without the purge valve assembly...live and learn I guess.
hookah hippie
I would put a piece foil over that hole so it remains air tight
