Lysolz
Been using Golden coals since I started smoking 4ish months ago and never have had this problem until now.Past five or six smokes, the coals die on the bottom. Got them lit well, blew on them until all the chemicals burned off and they were red hot. They start strong, but the smoke starts thinning. Took me several minutes the first time this happened, but turns out the bottoms of the coals are black and pretty much unlit.Bad roll of coals?Weather? SafeSearchOff
ive seen this before with 3k's.i think its because of the way the coal is made, and the constant pull of air downwards around the coal, no air is really being pulled from the bottom. i.e. the air is moving around the top and side of the coal, but not the part touching hte foil. with no air there on teh bottom, the coal dies. thats what i think.///
PhishPhood
I am using 3k QLs right now and I always break them in half before I use them... They're not that great to begin with and break easily so I just go with the flow and do it myself usually.
Hookah_Bob3
Scalliwag made a post before about modifying 3k coals. Take a thin phillips head screwdriver and bore a hole through the middle of it before you light it. It'll burn hotter though

I have that problem w/ a lot of quick-lite circular coals. The japanese style square ones and natural coals seem to work much better, and don't **** w/ the flavor as much IMO. mushrat
Or you could just de--ash tem and flip them over now and then. The first reply about the flat side touching the foil going out is most liekly correct. When you flip them and it's black, wait afew moments before really hitting it as the taste when they relite can be nasty.
Lysolz
I've been meaning to try some naturals...Perhaps this was a sign that the time is now.Maybe my next order will be just that. And maybe I'll add in a phunnel and some Tangiers while I'm at it.
Snoopy1966
My Golden Coals are doing that to me also. I break them in half but I flip em like mushrat said, then I turn them back over when they are going again. It was weird though because last night and this morning they kinda stayed black with just a light color of the ash the whole time. I cant wait for my exoticas to get here Wednesday. I have 2/3 of a stcik left for tomorrow. Maybe I will use some more lemonwood coals too, they burn to damn fast though. You will love the naturals. Get the exoticas.
