The hookah diffuser

Recommended Posts

This is a product I have invented to increase filtration and flavor of hookah tobacco.  The hookah diffuser extends the stem about 2 inches and eliminates the large opening at the bottom.  Instead, a sealed extension is attached with a common hookah bowl grommet and several tiny holes are drilled into the sealed extension in a spiral pattern.  This creates dozens of tiny smoke bubbles rising through the water instead of a series of single large bubbles.  By increasing the amount of bubbles and decreasing the size of the bubbles, I have created an exponentially larger amount of "bubble surface area" which is filtered by the smoke.  The spiral pattern is used to evenly distribute the intake pressure and bubble footprint.  The result is a much smoother and more flavorful smoke.  Another interesting side effect is noise reduction.  The sample I have provided was one of my more crudely made prototypes.  When a 1/16 drill bit is used, this allows for nearly 40 tiny holes which filter the smoke in a process which resembles the effervescent fizz of a soft drink.  The glug glug noise of the standard hookah can be reduced to almost nothing.  In fact, if the glass on the hookah is dark enough, it is impossible to tell that the smoke is being filtered by water at all, except that it is the most flavorful smoke you have ever tasted.  Please see the pictures and movie attached.

I believe that hookah difusers have been mentioned a few times in the
past, although I've never seen one in action. I understand how it can
reduce the noise, but I can't quite follow on how it can make the smoke
more abundant and flavorful.

By the way, don't know if its just my connection, but the two pictures
arn't loading. I'm not getting red X's, but they just arn't showing up,
so I'm not quite sure what happened.

P.S. I really like your base. Very colorful and looks great!

Then can you tell me exactly how it is filtered better? Because the way
I look at it, the same amount of smoke is going to be pulled through
the bottom of the stem with or without a diffuser. Sure the diffuser
makes the bubbles smaller, but how is that filtering it better?

We need more people to chime in on this topic because I obviously am
not seeing the big picture. A lot of people seem to think that the
process of smoke passing through the water filters a lot of the bad
chemicals out, which is a misconception. The water isn't doing much
more than cooling the smoke down, so whats the difference if the smoke
is pulled through smaller holes causing smaller bubbles going to do for
filtration?

You see my concern? Its not that I don't believe you, I would just like
some more input on the matter so I can understand it better.

Not having a huge frontal lobe myself, I can imagine it being filtered better. A normal hookah will pull  the smoke though the water in huge bubbles. Big, huge bubbles contain more smoke, and all that smoke in the big bubble pocket isn't getting filtered. When the diffuser creates many more smaller bubbles with your smoke, it's more efficient for the smoke to be "filtered." It's like taking that huge smoke pocket and smashing and smearing it more though the water to filter more smoke. Smell what I'm stepping in?

Ahh, now that is an explanation I can understand. But I thought that
the whole water filtration thing was a bust, and that water really
doesn't serve any purpose but to cool the smoke and not really filter
much at all. Does this mean that the diffuser makes the whole water
filtering process worth while, and now it is filtering for a change? If
so, than I think this would be something every hookah shouldn't be
without.

Thanks Mr. B. Very helpful as usual ;)

I really don't know why water wouldn't filter the smoke in the first place. It's got to be filtering something. Why else would my water turn "bass green?" Well, other than my bass swimming around in it.
HOLY POOP! That's it! Another fun project! Who has tried puting goldfish or guppies in their base while smoking? Almost as good as a mouse in the vacuum sealer.

The science of this is that you are getting more surface area smoke
touching the surface of the bubble using tiny bubbles. The water is
able to stick to the heavier particles and make the lighter ones more
heavier since it is makeing it "wetter"  Think of cooking a roast
and ground meat of the same volume. The ground meat is easier to cook
since there will be more surface area touching the pan. Of course you
would have to stir the ground meat. Hence the swirling bubble action
will make the system more efficient in the filtration proccess.

Also, can some one download this and send this via www.yousendit.com.
You dont have to enter a valid email address. Just copy, paste, and
post the link here. For some reason I can view this. I tried it on IE
and Mozilla. I waited 10 min each time.  It either is a setting
issue or my company is blocking this.

i saw this thread and straight i went to the garage...i need to get a
smaller drillbit and also figure out what u used to make the
extension?...i couldnt find anything besides a highlighter cap, i made
26 holes in it, 4 in the top of the cap and the other 22 on the side of
it...connected it using a standard grommet....now i need to put it to
the test...which will be in an hour or so...ill let u guys know if it
made any difference smoothness/taste wise...as for the physics of it as
cypress explained it may make a filtration difference due to the
surface area...his explanation makes full sense but there is no
scientist here to find out...anyways wont hurt us we know that
much...and if the taste is better then by all means its a go...ill re
post once i test it out...thanks hookah hitman

I just wonder what a piece of nylon stocking would do wrapped around the end of the shaft with a rubber band. Doubt if it would be quite as effective as something in a tube form, but may do something. May make the shaft look pretty.

Hey, speaking of the goldfish thing, since I'm getting more of a conscience as I get older, you think God would get me back somehow for that? All I need is the green light and I'm doing it baby! I'll just pop Paul McCartney"s Live and Let Die in the CD player and BAM: a James Bond flick in my kitchen!

Any aminal rights people here? If so, speak up and I won't do it. Well, at least I won't share pictures
