The reviews have been decent on the hobohookah, but as a first hookah I'm gonna venture to say no. It's less fool proof then a standard egyptian especially for someone not used to doing there own hookahs, hell I know the lack of a coal tray would have royally screwed me the first few times I smoked and had careless accidents before I was more careful. I'd say look at a decent Egyptian or even a smaller Mya for a good first time smoke.

I would say it would be the perfect hookah for a beginner as it is way sturdy and will never have to worry about breaking a vase... and you can just toss it in the dishwasher to clean it... PLUS it has a 30 day warranty now instead of the 14 day no question asks one.

SO I would say go for it...

I have a hobohookah and I like it a lot. If you're really interested, you should buy it as your 2nd hookah... but for now you should stick to a decent Egyptian, Syrian, or Mya. I'd look into a Mya QT.

I have both the hobo hookah and the gyro and love both of them for different reasons. The hobo hookah smokes like a large hookah, lots of smoke when set up right, and you can take it anywhere at all, easily. It's built very well and I even use it alot at home. If I was on a budget I'd just get the hobo and add the big one later-the quality on this one rocks.

It's personal preference. One thing bothers me about it is you can't just use any hose with it. You either have to have a screw on hose or use a hose adapter that fits perfectly. There's also no smoke release valve. It doesn't come with an ashtray but Mya QT ashtrays work with it. Don't get me wrong, I really like the hobohookah and I own one myself... but it wouldn't have been my first hookah. Like I said earlier, it's personal preference.

My recommendation is do not buy a cheap ol' Chinese hookah. Get something with quality.

If you're still deciding, I vote no hobohookah for your first pipe. Learn on a standard, tried and tested for generations hookah. The hobohookah, in my opinion is a specialized pipe for a specific purpose. I don't think you can go wrong with a Mya QT as a first hookah. Its a standard design, with the same type of parts found on most every hookah in the world. No special hoses or bowls, purge valve, expandable to two hoses, and is still small enough to be portable. Or easy to hide from the 'rents, if that is a factor.

Learn to get a good smoke on that, and you can use that expertise on everybody else's. Then you can get phunnel bowls, combo bowls, nammor hoses, quad bowls, hobohookahs, 4ft tall 8 hose rotators, specialty and novelty pieces.

Canon is right on the money there. thats not going to be the Hookah to start with. Thats a car hookah at best. Dude get a decent Mya, maganda etc... for the first one. Experience hookah right and go from there. Once you have a small hookah get a nice larger one then make that like #3.

This way you have went from average/good to good and then you have a toy also.

Just what I think.

I love my Hobo but it is my secondary to my Mya Gyro. These days because the hobo doesn't fit the Nammor and I smoke mostly at home.

Mya QT may be a good first choice since it's top quality Mya (stainless innards) and portable.

Learn on a decent hookah, made well! I can't emphasize this enough having gotten stuck with a POS and overpriced one that I got in Istanbul.

But I would not give up my hobo for anything, it'll go anywhere, smokes beautifully and is a great conversation starter.
