bringthepain
i think if mac would just make a cost-competative computer their marketshare would skyrocket..
erufiku
Wow... sexy as hell. My first thought. Then I scrolled down and saw the 1800$ base config price tag. Ouch.Overall, good job for ASUS. When they release their own "generic" version of the Air with a considerably lower price tag I am definitely going to think about it.edit: bringthepain - well, it doesn't seem likely b/c Apple adapted an elitist strategy. Selling point seems to be - if you're young, hip, and financially solvent, you need a mac. Being tech savvy and thrifty doesn't sell. Bryantos
QUOTE (nitrousconsumed @ Jan 16 2008, 02:40 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>you're absolutely right. other people dont realize that for what you pay you actually get a lot. mac has the corner market with the all-in-on PC market (iMac) if they look at the lowest configuration (that costs a little north of 1k) they find out that dells (which has proprietary hardware) or gateway's or sony's all-in-one are not only ugly but spec'd lower. on top of that if you buy a mac you dont have to worry about it being obsolete in two weeks your machine can give a machine thats a year newer a run for it's money. thats hardware wise, if you wanna talk about the OS then theres nothing to talk about vista is a complete rip off of tiger, except vista needs you to have 1.5gb of ram if you wanna turn the aqua on and needs to get it shit together with driver support./rantYou're a silly goose. Geiseric
Meh. Yet another example of Apple's commitment to form over functionality. Its useless! Look at it. Sure. Its slim. Whoop-de-f*cking do. It has ONE USB port. *Blink* No Ethernet. No optical drive, with a half-assed excuse that you don't really need one. Sure, we may be moving in that direction, but we haven't reached that yet... and it will be quite some time before we do. In the mean time.. yet another pretty retard of a computer. BTW... the remote disc thing... dumb as hell. Shouldn't need it, and viewing the contents of a disc over wireless is bound to be more than annoying. What else it missing... Firewire, Digital Audio output (of any kind) HDMI, ... I think I could go on for hours. This is a huge leap forward in making less useful devices... because people are too inept to operate complex ones. Sure, Mac OS is great if your uses fall into 3 basic categories.. Internet browsing; Audio editing (with expensive software); Image editing (with very expensive software); or video editing (with even more expensive software). When you need to spend upwards of $400 dollars to get the software you need for home use... On top of an already overpriced piece of hardware... We have an issue in value vs. priceI've said it many times before, and I will say it again. Mac OS is fine, if you are unfamiliar with the developments of computing in the last 10 years, and you just want to get some basic stuff done, and you don't want to dick around with any settings. However, if you want any control at all, if you want to have a decent amount of market competition on your software, knocking its price down into a reasonable range... Go with a more open OS. I'm not saying I love windows. Hell, I'm a Gentoo Linux man, myself. But using Mac OS makes me feel like a developmentally stunted monkey that needs everything to be hand fed to him. QUOTE . Dell and such are useless because they use their own parts and load garbage on with the software. 1.5 gigs is a little much and honestly at the moment most stuff doesn't work for mac even though they state it does. If your a gamer then you go PC like meOh. My. God. The green clips. THOSE F*CKING GREEN CLIPS. I used to work in repairs, and one of my biggest pet peeves was that whenever a dell came in, every F*CKING piece of hardware was somehow clamped on to a green plastic clip that could slide in and out. Easy on Dell repairs, they can just slap in a new ready made part. Not easy on 3rd parties. And the mobos... so very obscenely proprietary. Ugh. Hate 'em. erufiku
Didn't notice the 1 USB port part. Thumbs down. Toes too.On second thought, I am sure Apple will start selling 199$ USB hubs for "power users". Edited January 22, 2008 by erufiku

MechAnt
The new Lenovo X300 is better than the Macbook Air in every single way except for thickness (the Lenovo is still under 3/4 of an inch thick!). PC's FTW!!!

Voski
I was planing on buying a new macbook pro but they didn't update it at macworld which pissed me off. Hopefully they will very soon or my car is getting a suspension and my current comp will get a new HD
MechAnt
iirc, its similar to the macbook air. Here's the links with all the specs that show how much better it is than the macbook air. With that many added features, I'll gladly spend a couple hundred more for a Lenovo than a mac any day!
