Heat Management For Different Bowls.

Recommended Posts

So, I've been smoking using the bowl that came with my Bambino for about two months. Somehow, I could not get AW After Nine to smoke good out of that. Tried many different variables: amount of coal, size/quantity of holes, double foil vs foil ring method. None of the sessions I've had were truly good but I thought it's just my lack of skill packing a good bowl and managing the heat.

Last time I ordered from HS I got a cheap 3$ clay bowl that's been sitting around as a spare, so I decided to try it out today just for fun. Lo and behold, AW is smoking amazing - good clouds, good taste, and even a bit of a buzz. Only 'mod' I did was to put some foil inside the bowl and poking some holes in it prior to packing the shisha (holes in the bowl are too big and shisha kept falling out).

So, any pointers as to packing the MYA bowl and managing the heat? The clay one's fine but I had to put in a lot of shisha compared to the MYA. Edited by erufiku

the mya is a tad tricky ive found 1ql should do it, don't over pack it, its a deep bowl and when i pack to the brim i never get good results, i usually fill it up about 3/4 to the top and leave it fluffed dont really pack it down or anything. you will here tons of things, u just have to experiment dont give up.

What he said basically. The Mya bowls are hard to get used to. But you fill it 3/4 and lightly press it down. 1 33mm coal should work great, if its really wet like Layalina a 40mm will work fine.

The only complaint i have about my Mya is that the grommet and bowl are a little loose. So i used another grommet, it's not made for it and not perfect looking but it works.

I agree, do NOT fill to the top you will get harsh smoke. I put it also about 3/4 up, loose, and use one half of a 40mm, split in two. So, two quarters of one 40mm and that fills my Nammor hose happily.

Heat management is the big key in getting a good smoke because it is one of the four biggest variables, in my opinion

- Heat management (how many coals or parts of coals you have)
- ice in the base
- how much water in the base (1 to 1.5 inches over bottom of shaft)
- how much tobacco you have in the bowl

oh yeah and about 20 or so tiny pin needle holes in the top

we in the NoVA noticed this recently as well, seems as if a batch of Mya bowls came in the were a tad too wide at the bottom. doubling-up the bowl grommets fixes the issue and gets a tight seal.

I had the same problem with AW After-Nine, no idea why. The MN small glass phunnel worked for me.

Thanks for letting us know about the cheap clay one.

Yeah, Mya grommets are complete shit. I only use them for my nammor, because nothing else works.

i have to disagree there, i use Mya grommets for funnels and hoses, and anytime i smoke out of a Mya. and since they are so thin you can always double them up if you run out of larger grommets or use them for fixing small leak problems that are common with large-bore hoses like nammor and KM.

The main problem I have with them is that when they are moist, they're basically unusable. Whatever they're made of, it has terrible "grip". This means that if you want to have a double-session, you have to switch grommets, and you can't use them directly after washing (I've tried drying them... for whatever reason they still don't work).

Well, after spending an intimate hour with the search function of the forum, I think I finally nailed it.
What worked for me was:

-Packing only 3/5-3/4 of the bowl, with no "packing" so to speak of.
-Switching to single-layer, better quality foil.
-Poking 30-ish safety-pin holes in the foil, along with a large toothpick hole in the center (this one was most important I think)
-Using a half of a 40mm coal split in two.
-Limiting heat management to using the windcover for the first 5 minutes, then taking it off and putting it back on in another 15 minutes.
-Washing the hose.

This way AF and SB smoke perfect, and the 1/2 coal gets me about 40 minutes of smoke.

Also a question - noticed a lot of juice getting wasted with AF. Anyone tried a fake phunnel effect with a normal bowl lined with foil?
