Bowl-making

Recommended Posts

Okay, so, some of you might remember the new bowl design I came up with some time ago, but if not, just visit the link and check it out. Anyway, I'm making one from sculpey polymer clay right now, but I'm fairly sure smoking out of it might not be a good idea. The bowl itself is done, all except for the baking, which I found out is 15 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness at 275 degrees. (I'll post pictures if it comes out okay). But let me get down to my questions.
1. What type of glaze should I use on the bowl, and where could I get some? (I'm assuming some craft store around here would have it, but I just need to know what kind)
2. Since I haven't found much information on smoking out of a bowl made of polymer clay, does anyone know whether that would be a bad idea or not?
3. If smoking from polymer clay is dangerous, even with the glaze, would lining the bowl with some sort of metal such as aluminum foil take away some of the dangers so I can, at the very least, test the functionality of the design until I can find some safe material to make the bowl out of?

Any input would be appreciated, and if I find out that it does work, maybe I'll make a bunch and send some out. Maybe even try to get a patent or something.
Thanks

In order to glaze I think you need to use MUCH more heat than 275. You will probally need to talk to your colleges art dept and have them kiln fire it for you..

If you're not in college or highschool (which i doubt would let you fire that) i'm not sure on how you can do it.

Thats just what I THINK though. You may be able to glaze in your oven but from what I know from art in highschool its much more heat required.

Yeah how did you plan to glaze it? I've been doing pottery for 3 years. I use glaze that melts at the lowest temeperature which is around 700 or so. Are you using one of those home kits where you bake it and its kind of like playdo? Cause i dont think that would be too safe. But im not positive

Well, just talk to someone in the art dept. tell them what you want to do, and that you will pay for any material you use.

I'll bet you can even count it as a 1 credit art independent study if you work it out right
